My Pentium I Build Thread

Well I may have spoke too soon. I spent some time fiddling with the machine trying to get USB to work and now it is not posting. I've taken everything back out and jockied the remaining cards around. It can't be a CMOS setting because those can't be saved. I was getting “Conflict I/O ports: 378” before it stopped posting.
 
I didn't read the whole thread, but if the motherboard had USB headers and you wired them wrong (early USB headers weren't standard) and plugged something in, you could have shorted the 5v rail to ground and damaged something.
 
The serial port card has worked great. My next goal is to see if I can't get USB to work. Supposedly its physically possible under windows 95 OSR2.5. Although whether it will still work under DOS or not is another question. IF I can get it all working I can use this machine with my video capture card and play with it at my desk.

I did not. When I discovered the USB header was non-standard, I abandoned the onboard USB and focused my efforts on USB peripheral cards.

Here's what happened:

I first installed a SIIG JU-P20012 USB 1.1 card I have new-old-stock that works in other PCs. It did not work in this machine, '95 couldn't find the drivers. I found this download pack on archive.org: https://archive.org/details/drivers-usb-1.1-2.0-for-win-95-mac but my SIIG card has a sticker over the chip I am unwilling to peel off.

Next I tried a USB 2.0 card from my bin with an NEC chip and the NEC drivers from the IA pack. But I couldn't figure out how to point '95 at the correct driver file and it couldn't find the drivers when I put them on a virtual floppy.

I then decided to try a new-old-stock card with an NEC chip that I have an actual driver CD for. This is when the issue started. First it got into windows, started detecting the card, and then the screen went black. Then it stopped posting. I took the card out, it posted a few times with an I/O error, now it won't post at all.

I don't THINK the problem was the USB card itself. I followed standard troubleshooting and took out the new card, then the other new card, then every card except the graphics card. No joy. My beautiful little AT machine will not post.

That could be handy except I'm guessing I can't hook a normal one to it?
For the usb one all you need is to poke a hole to make it a 10-pin, 2x5 connector.
When plug it in, the 2 red wires should go to the 2 pins closer to the edge of the motherboard.

For the ps/2 mouse, you may need to make your own connector.

Refer to the motherboard doumentation on retroweb, for the pinout. your ps/2 mouse port should go to J3.

I've discovered long time ago I should not attempt to make my own connectors.

For the usb
I'm attempting to use a USB peripheral card instead. I'm gonna have the same problem with getting driver to work. Also I've noticed the motherboard USB does not appear in my device manager, so probably it has to be turned on in the BIOS which I can't do because no CMOS battery.

Oh and also I broke it and it won't post now. /cry emoji
 
So I left it unplugged most of an hour. Then I decided to try it one more time... and it booted! Then it rebooted mid-use. I don't know if I can take this emotional rollercoaster.
 
Reviving this thread to say that I'm going through the same emotional roller coaster ride at the moment. I decided some time back that I needed a DOS machine so I can use ImageDisk, 22Disk etc and generate some diskettes for some of my CP/M and early DOS collection. I pulled out an old ECS P4 motherboard (purchased from Fry's decades ago) I had stored and discovered why I scrapped it in the first place. Bulged cap's all over the place. So either recap or start over. Decided to start over since I wanted to use several 5.25" drives plus a 3.5" and the TexElec quad-flop card needed ISA slot which the ECS mobo did not have. Picked up an auction site motherboard with ISA's and installed the QuadFlop board. Every 5.25" drive I tried to use was reported to fail. With either the QuadFlop or the onboard disk controller that seemed to support two floppy drives. Many tries and no progress. Figured my stash of dirves were all untested and so could be all crap. So I went off and started to build a floppy tester that a person on the S100computers site designed. Then got the bug to just get'er done and picked up a second motherboard This one booted my DOS 6.22 floppy disk and formatted drive B: which was one of my 1.2MB 5.25's. Copied DOS to the 5.25". Progress. Pulled up the old bulletproof Antec tower I planed on using to house the system and crude, it doesn't have standoff locations for a Baby AT motherboard. So pull out a seoond tower, same thing. Pulled out a working tower that I use for some other stuff and it has the standoff locations, but I have to remove the motherboard in it and mount this new motherboard. What the heck, its progress. Right? So next, dig out a PATA IDE hard drive. Smallest one I could find was 40GB and I attempted to install DOS onto it. DOS said no go. Bong, the bell went off - maybe it needs to be less than 32GB for this early setup. Now what? Found a 16GB CF card and a CF to PATA IDE adapter card that fixs the CF card out through one of the tower's card slot opening. Great. Oh, crude, I need a 4 pin floppy/CD type connector to supply power, but all my 4pin to molex adapter cables are female Molex and I need a male to plug into the power supply cables. Forget that adapter and dig some more. Okay, I dig out a 2.5" IDE to 3.5" adapter that needs a female Molex for power so the power supply issue is solved. Added a 2.5" laptop to CF adapter card with the 16GB CF card and I had a booting system with DOS 6.22 on the hard drive. Works for now, clean up the mess when I get the rest working. Turned to adding a CD drive to the IDE cable and no boot. Oh, snap! Old brain cells kicked in and I rememberd all about Master/Slave on IDE stuff. Moved the jumper to Slave on the CD drive and booted. But the CD drive was fubar even after I told DOS to start with CD-ROM support. I had already wondered about how I was going to use one cable for the hard drive and the CD-ROM drive when the two were no where near each other in the tower case. Thought maybe I'll move the CD drive to a second IDE cable and the second IDE connector and see if that solves both the issue of it reporting to be dead and also the mounting problem of needing a very long cable to reach both devices. Dug deep into the old parts bin and found two more cables, both have pin 20 blocked, but the motherobard's connectors have all 40 pins and so no go. Got to break a pin or drill out the connector's blank. Put that aside and moved onto the next issue. Started to look for my box of Windows 98 and ME CD's and it has gone MIA. Spent way too much time looking for them. It was now nearng mid-night and I decided to call it a night and think about it some more. Haven't even attempted to get the QuadFlop floppy controller card working. Haven't even thought about adding a 360K 5.25" drive. I unremmebered so manay things about DOS and PATA IDE that my brain hurts. Figure I'll spend the next day or two looking for my Windows CD's. Maybe when I fond them I'll be willing to pick up where I left off.
 
...I have never heard of this before but now I want a quadflop board more than anything I've ever wanted in my life.

Also, @DeltaDon there's this key to the left of the keyboard, usually near the backspace key, has a little line and arrow on it. Should be marked "enter" or "return", words to that effect. Have you ever tried it out?
 
I assume you mean that I should have broken my rant into paragraphs? Yeah, well, what can I say..... However, the Enter key is on the right side of my keyboards. <G>

I did figure out that one of my issues was that my DOS boot diskette was a DOS 3.11 disk and as soon as I tried a Windows 98 start diskette I was able to use the CD-ROM drive to load Windows 98SE onto the CF card hard drive.

The male Molex to male Molex adapter cable arrived tonight and that solved the power cable issue with the CF card adapter and I installed adapter into the tower case. CF card sticks out of the back of my tower. So I can in swap CF cards for different hard drive configurations without opening up the case.

I still have to figure out how to format the a hard drive to have larger than 2GB partitions. One more thing that I haven't done in 25 years, more or less. I want at least two 8GB partitions and converted to FAT32 from FAT16. Until then I'm not going to worry about getting my QuadFlop controller installed and configured. I did find where the embedded floppy controller can be turned off in BIOS. So that issue is solved too.

OBTW, the QuadFlop has three resistor packs onboard, which is nice if you run into termination issues. Two are spares of different resistor values when compared to the active one. I don't think that is very well documented. Also, per information I've learned from friends, I would suggest that if you do pick up a QuadFloppy card that you update the card's firmware to version 2.7 since others have had issues with the older firmware version that as was shipping from TexElec some time ago. They might have updated the firmware on new cards they ship, but maybe not.

Also, there's several videos on Youtube showing the QuadFlop in use and also being setup.

It is at this point I will admit that despite being 41 I've never quite mastered left from right. It's a persona failing, among many.

Anyway, can you tell me more about this quadflop controller? Maybe some pictures? I've never heard of anything I wanted more or needed less.

They produce the QuadFlop which I believe is based upon a hardware and firmware original work done by Sergey. They also make new foam pads to repair keyboards using those things for switch contacts. Plus lots of other bits and pieces for people like me that failed engineering school and went into business admin.

Which came first Quadra Flop or SCSI? IIRFC, you could get maybe 7 or 8 on the SCSI vine. Been a while since I fooled with that one. I'd bet on the SCSI.

Ok that's even cooler than I thought. So not just some rare unobtainable card, its still being made. Neat!
 
My major issue, at the moment, is that I can't get the hard drive to format a partition larger than 2GB. Not being able to get at least an 8GB partition size on the16GB CF card has me paused until I figure out a solution. I'm guessing the issue is the motherboard's BIOS. Finding an updated BIOS for this board might not be easy and it's been way too many years since I routinely formatted hard drives with Format and FDISK. So I had to stop and go online to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. So I'm relearning old skills.

Tomorrow I'll dig into my hoard of floppy diskettes looking for a copy of Ontrack and see if that solves my issue.

Once that's done then it is just a matter of routing all the ribbon cables and buttoning up the case until I find a working 360K drive to add to the system. Meanwhile, the 1.2MB drive and ImageDisk or 22Disk should allow me to be able to make some 720K quad density diskettes for my Ampro Little Board as a first test. Perhaps even some DSDD diskettes for my Epson QX-16 as long as I use new or magnetically wiped diskettes.

I’m confused. Are you using a FAT32 aware OS to create these partitions? In an earlier post it sounded like you were using DOS to try to create big partitions as FAT16 and *convert* them to FAT32? Because, well, 2GB is max size for a FAT16 partition, that’s not going to work.

The way I've gotten around this is find another system without any limitations(like a later era IDE system, win XP or something), create all the different partitions you need, and save them as files, then write them back to CF cards as needed. Its worked out pretty well so far. Then again, for older systems like you're describing, I also use ZuluSCSI instead of CF/IDE.
