I know this is a Pentium 4 machine but I’m hoping a member has more experience on this machine than I. I have a Dell Dimension 8400 tower and I need to get to the power button control panel. Was working fine and now the button doesn’t feel like it’s doing anything but compressing its own spring. Hopefully someone can explain the steps because I don’t want to start snapping retainers.
Thanks

If it's anything like other towers in the Dimension series I've seen, you first have to remove the side panel that you would normally use to access the motherboard and expansion slots. Then there are several (2 or 3?) plastic tabs along the edge of the case touching the front panel. These are actually part of the front panel. Pushing on them in the direction away from the motherboard should unlatch them and make the entire front panel "swing" away from the case. The "hinges" on the other side shouldn't be connected to the case and the entire panel will come completely off.

Thank you for reply. I should have mentioned this is one of Dell’s towers that opens like a book. This changes the rules completely. My Inspiron 3647 opens like that. 3 tabs and the face is off. Not so lucky here. Someone had a similar issue years back in a Dell forum and they said the small piece that slides on the back of the button probably fell off. Well I was able to confirm that’s my problem. But no mention of how to remove the face to put it back on. I’m able to remove the bezels with their tabs for the optical drives and the 3.5” which lets me see the small board and the button on it, but there’s no more tabs to push to release the next bezel, which is the one where the power button is. Can you show pictures of the back of the front panel? In other words, can you get photos from the inside of the case looking behind the panel?
Maybe we can notice something and figure out how the panel comes off.
