IBM 3174-61R Desktop Terminal Controller I don't know enough to know what it'd pair with, not mine (just someone in Austin) but last time he had it listed for $4.99 with 0 bids and now it's pretty much destined to be $1 unless it gets bid up plus the unfortunate $74 (although this is me also being in Austin) for shipping. Dunno if he has some huge shipping amount but figured I'd point it out for any mainframe users. It looks like it'd be for some system/390 gear with token ring.

It will pair with most IBM co-ax terminals. Some need extra microcode. If it has enough memory, and a hard disk, and you have the "latest" config (C6 I think) you can connect it to the Hercules emulator via token ring. I used to connect mine via Windows/2000 box but these days I use a Cisco router. I paid about $40 for mine. You only seem to have a single disk drive and no hard drive, soe not too much use. Given there are no diskettes and it needs an upgrade to be I think a skip might be its ultimate destination.

These days any current user of S/390 would just use TN3270 to connect...

Not mine ;-) But yeah, I actually do have 2 similar units that I acquired from a warehouse a long time ago but mine had floppy drives to do the IPL or whatever I guess. Either way I had just been watching it for kicks to see if it had any interest at all (not sure I'll ever have a need for the ones I do have) although I don't feel I need a 3rd even if it did just cost me $1 lol. I was just posting incase someone like you who knew more about it might have interest. I don't know the seller and haven't ever dealt with them personally.

At that price I would be completely interested simply as to stack it with my 5394 controller (and since the microcode disks are unobtanium) and say "I got that for a buck" however if it's $75 to the USA, to Canada will be beyond what I'm willing to pay for something I can't really use.

Actually, I think I have the proper modem to dial it into a remote system.

Hey I stumbled across this thread when I found this on ebay.

Do you think its worth that? I noticed it appears to have both disk drives but I wouldn't be sure about a hard drive.
I've seen these on ebay before but only in about the 200 dollar range, not something I'd be willing to pay, but I ran across this...
I've never worked with 'token ring' before so I'm unsure of what I can do with it, but it seems the ISA cards and such are about 20 dollars and I just bought an IBM ps/2 model 70 so I guess I have something to interface with if I wanted? I just need some input before adding something else to my small room
Sorry for bumping this.

So then it seems possibly worth it to just click that buy it now?
Its be great to get this thing doing something now that it seems we have disks and interfaces available.

I just noticed when looking closely one of the disk drive's clamping arms are broken off. Hm... Anyone know if that's a bad sign or if I just need a new arm or a new drive and if those drives are a standard model of some sort?

Thrash how did you obtain those disks do you have one of these units yourself or have you worked on them before? Those disks you have if they are the complete set and what are needed to get this thing running would be quite valuable to be uploaded to the web as it seems these things are in the hands of a few people here and or going to be now that someone has disks for them.

The drives aren't quite standard, they're a special 2.4MB type, made by Hitachi IIRC. But it looks like it's just the plastic lever that got knocked off... I'd imagine the drive is probably OK otherwise. It's constructed about the same as any other 5.25" drive, just a plastic piece that snaps onto the end of the metal shaft, so it shouldn't be terribly difficult to rig something up. You might even be able to borrow a lever off some other drive.

Alright, the seller does say its fully functional so I asked if this is an actual image of the unit and if it is does the top drive work and only need a new lever or does the top drive have more wrong with it. Hopefully they get back about that. Anyway they are a special type of drive huh? So then there really isn't a way to get copies of those disks you have then I guess... Unless you can copy it with this machine and can find new diskettes...
Well I guess I'll get it if the seller gets back and its not already gone! Hopefully this unit has a hard drive in it. No way to tell without listening to it turn on or looking inside it I'd guess right?

Hey look what I found.

The seller may have called it a "token ring" unit, but that doesn't change the fact that the 61R is a remote establishment controller that communicates over an SDLC link. It is possible to add a token ring interface to a 61R (and you still need new microcode to drive it), but 9 times out of 10 on eBay a "token ring" 61R has neither of these things. Without a picture of the back panel, you don't know.

Also, without an S/390 mainframe attached to your token ring network and a 3270 terminal to attach to the 3174, there is nothing that this unit can be used for.

So this unit really has no use unless you have something else with SDLC link and or a mainframe to hook it too... Well thanks for the info.
As neat as it would be to have it I guess I'd truly have no use for it anytime soon so spending 75 bucks on it right now wouldn't be worth it.
Thanks!

I'm wondering if anyone had a model number of the Token Ring interface for the 61R? Would it be difficult to find the required microcode?

As far as I know all token ring interfaces for 3174s are the same. Is just the cabling to the outside world that is different. So in the rack mount units the card slots in from the back and the connector is accessible. . In the tabletop versions the card slots in vertically and need a cable to run to the back plate. Ethernet cards are around e.g.

and the firmware is on Bitsavers

and there is also info on using a GOTEK so you don't need physical floppies.

Thank you for these pointers - It seems I need to get my hands on either a 74F4263 or a 60G3976. The price on the site you've quoted seems reasonable, but shipping to Germany would probably be too expensive. If anyone in Europe has one of these to part with, get in touch. Thank you!

Hey Hans :-)

I have a, untested, 9351 type which should be a "Token-Ring Adapter (16/4Mbps)". I don't have a need for it, your welcome to it for the cost of shipping from the US.
