according to wikipedia, in 2016 unisys released a windows-based os2200 simulator "for education and leisure purposes", but the links to it are dead and since it required registration there's no chance of archive having scooped up the installers. does anyone know if this was archived anywhere? i made an inquiry to unisys some time ago and was ignored, so i don't think they're particularly interested in distributing it themselves anymore.

if you look back on comp.sys.unisys they had two. they killed off the burroughs one first then the 2200.
it was always keyed so even it you manage to find a copy it won't work

Aren't the simulators also the actual processor products these days? I mean, is Unisys yet building actual A series or 2200 processor hardware?

my understanding is that it just runs in vmware now, so technically you are just getting a simulator

also, i suspect something could be done about the licensing requirement, if only there were binaries to play with :)

correct. I assume the PHBs realized there was no shareholder value being created by just giving things away
I had to decode this one! Likely that PHB = Pointy-Haired Boss
Yes, shareholders don't see the ROI in brand "good will" .... nor PHBs unless perhaps it's being hawked by "influencers" with large followings.

At some point in time, the only people knowing anything about the old mainframe systems would be enthusiasts that have learned through various hobbyist programs, or thanks to the manufacturers just not complaining when things end up at archive . org or whatnot.

Do the PHBs really want their product to die earlier?

part of me thinks it's a desire for security through obscurity, but it's not like a dedicated attacker is going to take the time to register for a hobbyist program...
