You are right - you need to know what you are looking for. However, I did manage to get a null modem cable from my local RS not that long ago.

For vintage systems, the 25-pin or mixed/dual version might be more appropriate. I'd have to dig to find the RS# on mine. Of course, the printing on the connector saying "NULL MODEM" helps too.
