I know (at least 95% sure) that the PET cases are powder coated, but I recently got a 4040 disk drive that is in great condition, with only a few scratches on the upper case. Nothing actually in the metal, just visual blemishes.

A while ago I found a spray paint someone had mixed that matches the PET cases, but I cannot find that anymore.

Does anyone know if this is still a thing?

The better paint which comes in multiple shades is Duplicolor spray in small tins designed as car touch up paint. It is available on ebay or from automotive parts stores. There are many versions of white from bright white right through to cream shades, as it was made to match multiple car colors. Also many other colors, at least 5 or 6 shades each of other colors etc. It also has excellent surface adhesion and is great applied to plastics or metals.

Mostly for vintage computer restorations, I like to use white because I think in most cases it was closer to the original, which tends to age and darken over time, though it is a personal preferece if you want is more towards cream of off white for an authentic aged look, or if you want to partially paint and match the existing paint with a specific color. A good white for example is Artic White, and an off white called Torquay Sand, part DSH-47

If you are painting any steel with surface rust it is important to deactivate it first with Fertan organic rust converter, or the rust will menain active and ultimately expand under the paint.

Yep, I also restore old cast iron cookware, so this something I know quite well, but thank you for the reminder.
