I installed SuSE Linux 10 on my VCR PC yesterday. I found that a screen res of 800x600 is way to low for me and so i opened up SaX2 and told it to change to 1280x1024. When it got to the test mode screen, i saw something was wrong: the resolution was not 1280x1024, but 1280x600. I click cancel and try out 1024x768. A little better, but the actual resolution is 1024x600. Frustrated, I use gft to get a modeline for 1280x1024 and put the modeline in xorg.conf and init 6 (reboot). when X comes back up, i open up SaX2 again and swap to 1280x1024. No effect, it still is 1280x600. ideas? i'm not using a widescreen monitor. also there is an intel 800 something-or-other in this coputer as the video card and in xorg.conf it has loaded the driver i810.

The i810 is limited to a maximum resolution of 1024x768. The easiest way would be to step back down to 800x600 before trying to increase resolution again. Or simply edit xorg.conf or use the text based configuration tool. Each major Linux handles this a bit differently so you would need SuSE specific reference.

Welcome to the fun world of X where the software is smart enough to detect a resolution won't work but not smart enough to only stick to resolutions that work on given hardware.

well then 1024x768. however, i tried that and it resized to 1024x600 instead. i'll try 915resolution later.
