After spending a few days fooling around with various old boxes and trying to get an Adaptec 1542CFS SCSI+floppy controller working in a 486 ISA machine, I found a Dell Optiplex GX110 that, according to Dave Dunfield's TESTFDC program, works reliably as a single density controller. I'm using a Shugart 801 8" drive in a Morrow DISCUS enclosure, connected to the PC with an FDADAP board.

I can format disks using IMD and PUTR but I haven't been able to read anything using PUTR from either my newly formatted disks or from disks created on my RX01 using Dave Gesswein's DUMPREST programs. I've used PUTR extensively with Dave G's RK05 images while implementing Kyle Owen's SerialDisk on the PDP8 and haven't had any problems reading, booting or modifying (add/remove files) RK images with PUTR but this may be the first time I've looked at RX images. Typically, I use syntax similar to this: MOUNT R: OS8XX.RX /RX01 /OS8 within PUTR. I can mount, boot from and read the same image in SIMH.

What am I missing?

I just got an answer back from Dave Gesswein. Apparently his images are ordered by sector, not block (inferring this from info in the PUTR manual), so the correct syntax is: MOUNT R: OS8XX.RX /RX01 /OS8 /NOINTERLEAVE. This works. For some reason, simply MOUNT R: OS8XX.RX with no switches works just as well and is much easier to type.

Thanks to Dave and John Wilson for their support. Al, thank you too!

Best,
Jack

Hijacking the thread a bit I guess. Does anyone have an FDADAP board that isn't getting enough love-n-attention? If so then I know of a boardless home that would cherish it ...

Thank you. We now return you to the previously scheduled programming ...
