Searching for NEC PC-8001A software & hardware

Yeah, that's exactly the board inside the PC-8031 and similar units. You can just swap out one or both of the floppy drives for a Gotek or two (modulo any of the usual peculiarities of FDD interfaces, such as select lines and head load and so on).

L3DiskExplorer v0.6.3 doesn't know how to create a PC8000 DOS SSDD disk, so you have to start from a real SSDD disk and make an image of it, then add the programs to it...

Hi, I also have a PC-8001 and PC-8031. I can't recreate working 1D floppies with L3DISKEX. I can't find any valid .d88 files to start with. Can you help me find a 1D .d88 file to download? I'd like to know how to create a basic disk. Thanks.
 
I also started from the file "[Compilation] PC-8001 Games (Disk 1) {pass=123}.d88" found on neo kobe, burned with greaseweazle works on DD drives but not on the PC-8031, asks for the password, the first introductory screen appears and then shows I/O error and to check the PC-8031-2W drive (shouldn't it have been created for the PC-8031?). Same thing happens with the emulator, feeding it the single-sided .D88
 
I modified my PC-8031 by replacing the EPROM (with the one from the PC-8031-2) and installing an IBM floppy drive (set to DS0) and it became a PC-8031-2. I booted the N-Basic disk (PC-8034-2W) and used the DStoSS.* program, it formatted and copied the files to the second drive (the original SSDD) without errors. However, this format is not recognized by the basic disk, giving a "bad allocation table" error (same thing on the emulator). If I start the "[Compilation] PC-8001 Games (Disk 1)" which according to the boot screen seems to have been created for the PC-8031-2W with the commands "files 1" and "files 2" I see the directory on side 0 and side 1 of the first drive, while with "files 3" I see the directory on side 0 of the second drive (the SSDD) which works regularly. I think that in order to use the PC-8031 I need to find the first Disk Basic (the one from 1980) programmed for SSDD units, otherwise I need to permanently change it to PC-8031-2

Hi there, I do have this Expansion but unfortunately not the Pc-8031. Any way to make it working with my PC-8001 ? The same person who sold me this unit has a 8 inches french disk drive unit with I think a controller inside including 6116 ram, 8085 cpu etc..

Tonight, I've finally received what I just bought as being a PC-8032B-2W

But what a surprise when opening the box and seeing this modified label on the back !

What do you think ? Been upgraded to 8031 by adding the controller ? How to be sure ?

Hi,
Well it certainly looks from the outside like a 8031. Best to take a look inside, here are some photos of my 8031 and 8032 units.


The 8031 has the controller board and floppy drives, the 8032 contains just the bare floppy drives.

Hi Stansteph54, yes I agree it looks like you have a 8031x drive. Sorry I have (still!) yet to get my drive connected. In local lingo I need to pull my finger out :-)
