Hi all,

I have an IBM branded TM-100-2A 40 track DS drive that I'd like to repair. Last time it was used it suffered a mildly catostrophic failure (c36 a 475, which if I'm reading correctly is 4.75µf, tant capacitor went pop and caught fire!).
I can source and replace this cap easily enough but should I take the precaution of replacing the other tants on the board at the same time?

Cheers.

Phill.

No, tantalums are generally very reliable but will go "bang" randomly. Long term, I don't think that wholesale replacement of tantalum caps is a winning strategy.

Might be worth checking the voltage rating of the tantalums, for long term reliability its often said you should use a part rated for about twice the working voltage.

In general I've found tantalums very reliable so I wouldn't be rushing to replace working ones without a specific reason.
