Okay, after a year and a half of delays, I finally got my router fixed and my server up. Finally.
Main info page/site is at retro-net.ath.cx (might be getting 'real' TLD soon)

Note: the page lies, the Quake I server is actually up.

I will be adding a Windows 3.1/WFW3.11 info/downloads page soon, as well.

IRC,
FTP,
HTTP,
Quake.

I have just linked my IRC servers with 'protofusion' and 'Oh! No! Publishing'. Yay! (The IRC MOTD lies, main chan is #retrobox ).

Have fun!

Hm.. down maybe due to overwhelming demand? ;-) Could be PM worthy but in case others were also wondering, what is .cx? It always looks like china or czech at first glance although I know it's not. Googling it comes up with "Christmas Island" which I'm also not overly aware of what that means. Just curious.

Congrats on getting the server up again,
- John

what is .cx?
it is just part of the address. he probably chose the "ath.cx" ending because it was the shortest. that is why i chose it. when i have everthing running mine is 486.ath.cx or crazzywolfie.ath.cx

It's now down, I've been IRCing on it and had a couple Quake deathmatches on it today without a hitch. The .ath.cx is a free (temporary) domain name.

One problem: I was going to buy a TLD (retronet.org or retro.net) but the ones I want are all taken, so I'm going to have to change the name of my WHOLE SITE to something that I can buy a relavent TLD for. Any suggestions?

you should just keep the free one. i've had my free ones for over 2 years. i use the dyndns updater so that i don't have to log in every 30 days and it also keeps your web address pointed to your ip address.

No, it's not. Remove the "www."
Yep, that fixed it. :)
@Tandyman: If you want the www to work you need to make a duplicate directory with that name for every site where you want to have www included. You don't need to copy everything over, just make symlinks. Actually apache2 (I'm assuming) has a utility, just type "a2ensite" and you're good to go.

Okay. And I'm not using Apache, since it (for some reason) wouldn't work on port 80, and I'm just too lazy to figure out why, so I just used Mike Chambers Win32 HTTP server (ask him about it yourself, since I don't think links are at rubbermallet.org).

EDIT: ATM, I'm thinking of theretronet.org for a TLD. Either that or retro-net.net (a little redundant), theretronetwork.com, retrorandomness.org, retroserv.org tandyland.com (sounds like something mattel makes), or something COMPLETELY different.

Nice response times. Just a word of advice (I'm just running with the assumption you didn't know this ;-)) but with an ftp account name like that you'll quite certainly get "tagged" if you haven't already by ftp bots looking for unprotected hosts to dump their garbage on. It's good you have that message on your site not to upload bad stuff, if you don't already put it in your MOTD or whatever they call the login message for your FTP software also so if anyone decided to come after you it'll show that you already said that's not the purpose, intent, and that any and all traffic may be logged and used for legal action as required by law. That should probably cover some of the legal crapola.

Depending on your OS you're hosting it on if it's Windows some bots create directories that Windows will say are invalid (thus you can't delete them). I think it takes a Windows boot disc or linux boot disc to get around that.. kinda annoying but another heads up. My friend did a public ftp server like that years and years ago.. within a few days his drive was full with stuff that was interesting but we didn't want.

Indeed hurray for the thriftiness! :)
What's the plan with the ftp? The cookie was nice though!

The FTP is just a convientient place to dump your junk. I might redirect the guest homedir to be a subdirectory in my /http folder so that the files uploaded can be downloaded via FTP. If you go into the IRC, you will notice that the topic of #retrobox is " [..RETRONET..] www.retro-net.ath.cx | We have COOKIES!", so BINKI (whos server I am now linked with) went into the FTP and put a cookie in it!

I'm also thinking of setting up a Synchronet-based telnet BBS (the Retro Net). Still need to get me some cool RETRONET ASCII art :)

Yes, all the "retro" ones worth having are no doubt taken, so how about tandypunk? The dot org, com, and net are available. (you asked :) )

Edit: BTW, I just noticed that the browser window where I had your site wasn't identified. That's because you don't have a title for you site. In case you don't know, you do like this:
<title>
RETRONET
</title>
</head>
<body>etc etc

have you tried Synchronet BBS. it has quite a few features like http, ftp, gopher, irc, telnet and mail. i was using it on a 486 with 64mb memory and it ran pretty good.

OK, you guys caught me in a pedantic kinda mood so please don't take offence... ;-)

The TLD is the part after the last dot, e.g. com, org or in this case cx. So good luck buying one of those ;-) What you need is just a domain name.

That rather depends on how things are configured. I'd say that the simplest way to do it, regardless of which HTTP server you're using, is to add an alias to the appropriate virtual host. That is of course assuming you're using virtual hosts; if not, you needn't do anything other than add the "www" DNS record (which doesn't exist, and is actually the main reason the site can't be reached with the www. prefix).

I also really wouldn't recommend putting an open FTP server on the Internet - that's just asking for trouble. Actually, I wouldn't recommend running an FTP server at all unless you know how to set it up properly and securely. At the very least, set some kind of quota on the public directory (even better: put it on its own filesystem/partition) to avoid the whole thing grinding to a halt if (when?) it gets filled up with porn and warez.

A commendable effort though, on the whole. It's at least refreshing to see a nice, simple site for a change, without gaudy backgrounds and distracting animations all over the place.

I was thinking about that. FTP servers are perfect on a LAN but trouble on the net. For people to download, I've found that just letting files be available via http is completely painless. You can either do it with links for easy browser download or post a list for use with wget. Simple forum software may solve the file up/down problem. I guess synchronet (which tandyman mentioned) would work the same.

I second that. :)

It feels like we have quite a lot of BBS:es hosted by people on the forum, and future plans for new ones. Maybe it's time to setup that ole' message exchange thinngy :)
