I've always wondered what "vintage" really is. I've done tons of research
and finally found an answer! It turns out that it's not a real time frame,
but most people consider it to be from around the 1950s to the 1990s,
though some people extend that until the early-2000s. However, vintage
really refers to ANY time period. You can even have a 2013 vintage. It would
be lame, but it got me thinking. If something from only a couple of years ago
could (in theory) be vintage, why not run FreeDOS (too lazy for MS-DOS or DR-
DOS) on a 2009 Asus Eee PC 1005HA-VU1X through the SD Card slot? (hard drive
has too much valuable info and would take about 2 days to back up) I figured
why not try this weird mismatch of time. I can tell you now, it was a pain in
the butt. I tried using MS-DOS 7.1 (Windows 98s underlying DOS, for those
that don't know), but it wouldn't load stuff well. I tried DOS 5.0 and 6.22,
but they didn't even load! I finally tried FreeDOS. It worked so well, I'm
typing this in EDIT.COM. I'll copy it to my newer laptop later. I have to say,
though, not everything will work right. I've tried to load Battle Chess
several times, but it just gives me an error. I'm going to place a list of
working apps here.
EDIT:
EDIT.COM
QBasic
QuickBasic 7.1(it's different, but not by much)
Gorilla(with MASSIVE speed issues)
CuteMouse driver
Manhunter
Blackthorne(installs, but won't load. maybe driver issue)
I'll show what all I did later.
