Hi guys and gals --

I have an IBM 9590 system with what appears to be a bad power supply. Does anyone happen to have a spare they would be willing to sell me?

The system turns on and runs for a short while, but after 30 seconds to a minute, the monitor stops receiving signal and the power light on the front of the machine slowly fades out, but the power supply fan stays on. I believe the hard drive even stays spun up. If you turn it off and then back on, it won't turn on most of the time until it's been given a few minutes to sit in the corner and think about what it's done! I already tried removing the power connectors from the motherboard and cleaned the connections - same issue, unfortunately. Super strange... Anyway, I figure the power supply is the likely culprit...

Bump. These must be pretty hard to come by! I've even got a tickler on the auction site and nothing! Super unfortunate since I actually still use my Model 90 at least a couple times a week!
 
PS/2 Model 90 and 95 machines and parts are hard to come by. I would connect a scope or multimeter to the each of the voltage rails and see which one drops over time (if any).

Google says X/Y safety capacitors seem to fail in those power supplies, and they can be replaced easy enough by yourself or a tech.

Thank you for the information. If those safety capacitors had failed, wouldn't they appear physically cracked or damaged, or not allow the PSU to turn on at all, though? I have the PSU completely apart and there appears to be no visible damage anywhere.

You have to grab a meter and check for shorts or take the capacitors out and use an ESR meter to see which ones are out of spec.
 
Gotcha - yeah, I was afraid of that. I kind of wanted to have a working unit so I could verify the issue is indeed the PSU. Once it had been determined that the PSU was the issue, I planned on working to fix the existing one. But yeah - I think you're right. It's gonna be hard to find one. I guarantee there are some brand new units sitting in a warehouse somewhere, but who knows if and when they'll become available for sale!

Just because some new-old stock unit may be sitting in a warehouse somewhere, doesn't mean that it is good. There's a high chance the capacitors have leaked or gone bad and the unit will explode when powered up.

When electronics are manufactured and not used, they're not frozen in that state in time, they age and go bad like anything else, even if they're never used.
 
If kept in proper climate control, they'd likely be OK, but that was just me rambling. I'd be thrilled with just a used one that works!

Testing Model 90 Power Supply should help determining function. PSU interior should be blown out with computer duster if dirty. Test the PSU without the PSU attached to J25/J26. The suggestions concerning the caps are apropos.

If the PSU voltages test out, check all MCA slots for debris or damaged springs. Blow out dust as needed. Hook up to J25/J26, remove ALL adapters and devices [leave floppy drive attached]. Video attached to planar XGA, refdisk in floppy drive.

Pray to Chester A. Heath. Power up.

While being stored in climate controlled environments will ensure a device is less likely to have problems, that doesn't apply to capacitors. The electrolyte is corrosive and rubber rots, allowing it to leak out of the capacitor.
