Is need to install operating system for the pcs86.

What brand and model is the hard drive?

If it happens to be an A/X model (on the end) you might get lucky.

Otherwise XT IDE is NOT compatible with your PIII.

Even if it is an A/X model you need to jumper it as an AT hard drive for your PIII to setup the drive.

Also note, if you format a drive on a more modern system your old pc may not be able to read it as the # of sectors, etc may vary slightly. I've had this too many times to be coincidence. You also must still format and install an OS on the drive that the machine can use such as DOS 6.2 or lower.

Also you could just put a modern 1.44mb drive in the machine and boot up using a regular dos 6.2 boot disk made on your PIII and not bother switching hard drives
