"Space War"

I may have the BASIC listing for it in a book somewhere that you could type in. Let me check my archives and I'll get back to you...

I believe this is a close variation of the game you're talking about:

There is a "sample run" on the last two or three pages which gives you an idea of how the game works and what it does, so you can see if it's identical to the one you're looking for.

If this isn't it, give me some time to do some more looking.

That isn't quite it. This is the game that I had in mind:

The link takes you to a page with a java applet that runs the game. But the thrust on the ships is weak, which practiacally means that you have to be an astronomer to design your orbit.

After visiting the link, I must say that I don't think I have anything like that, nor do I think it was ported to the C-64, although I could be wrong.

It reminds me of Gravity Force, XPilots and of course Asteroids, if we should look at a bit older games. There were a number of man-on-man duel games on the 64, but perhaps none that exactly resembles Space War. I'd bet the home computing generation in the early 1980's had forgotten the first mainframe gaming from the 60's.

My father and I were introduced to Space War in the late seventies. It was an arcade game that we used to play together. It's one of the few arcade games that I've ever played. I've never been good at playing one person games (except X-Wing), but against another human playing Space War I do alright. For some reason I am good at aiming shots against the opponent's ship when it is far away on the screen.

We had the game on our TRS-80, too. I think the fact that it simultes gravity makes it so popular.
