I've got an 8 foot fence which keeps them out, but sometimes I leave the gate open by mistake and they'll wander in. You have to be careful to not freak them out because they will throw themselves at things and make a mess if they feel cornered. They're pretty dumb critters and everyone here has bumps in their cars from them. I think it's partly because some people have been shooting the cougars that the deer are like an overgrown rodent population here. Because of their irratic behaviour with cars, they actually pose more of a danger to humans than the big cats do.
