I am cleaning up some 5160 motherboards and on one of then the BIOS chips (U18 & U19) have cloth labels on them. Is this just s quirk of where they were made?

5160 BIOS chips

Sometimes, on the 5160 and 5170, the BIOS chips were EPROMs. The cloth is hiding the EPROM's window.

From that and the part numbers on your chips, we can tell that you have the 01/10/86 revision of the ROMs.

Ahhhh, many thanks
The EPROM has a little quartz window, you can erase it by putting UV light on it for 15 minutes or so...
Sticker prevents accidental erasure - sometimes light on it will make it act strange when it is running, also. It makes a convenient place to mention what revision was programmed into it too!
