  • From now on we will require that a prefix is set for any items in the sales area. We have created regions and locations for this. We also require that you select a delivery option before posting your listing. This will hopefully help us streamline the things that get listed for sales here and help local people better advertise their items, especially for local only sales. New sales rules are also coming, so stay tuned.

Sound Cards For Sale Tracker

It's always possible to ask the seller if they eventually do ship internationally unless they spesificly states in the listing that it's not the case. The local-shipping-only option seems to be rather default, and most sellers with listings of local-shipping only will actually ship internationally if you just ask them.

Just remember to specify to the seller, if he/she agrees to ship internationally, that he/she sometime needs to give permission for you to place any bid. If I had done that, the card in the example you specify would have sold for a completely different price.

Thank you for bringing this valid point to our attention. The person in the example informed me he did not wish to send anything abroad. I am aware that buyers can be allowed to bid (even when they are based abroad).

FWIW, I emailed that seller and asked him if he was willing to ship internationally, told him where I was at. He said he was quite willing, but then later emailed me and said that while he'd still sell it to me if I wanted, he hadn't been able to test the card, and if it didn't work, losing the shipping cost two ways to return it for a refund would be expensive. I tended to agree with him, so I didn't bid.

*edit - After seeing PeterNY's post, I had to check my ebay messages. I got the seller confused - the seller I corresponded with sold a similar packaged/price (boxed lapc-i and mcb-3 for 99GBP, also specified UK-only shipping), but my seller was different (though still had Steve as part of his ebay ID)

For some reason people in the UK are hesitant to ship abroad: my suspicion is that they psychologically have issues living on an island. :)

The retail discussion is totally irrelevant anyhow as the price of the card now is only determined by market demand and right now there are way to many LAPC-Is available. I am surprised the prices haven't fallen to the sub $200 category.

There are usually between 10 and 20 people watching a Roland LAPC-I on eBay so there is still demand for the card. I agree however that there are more on offer so far in 2011 than in 2008 - 2009 - 2010 combined. Perhaps retro sound card fatigue is setting in with a lot of collectors / hobbyists. :D

FYI: I never include Sound Blaster 16, Sound Blaster 32, Pro Audio and other cards here as that would become unmanagable.

Well yes, but those SB16 cards with the ASP chip included are considered rare/special and supposedly have unique features (just like how I'd list an 8bit PAS) ... that's why I've decided to list it this time.
Otherwise you're right of course, most later Creative cards aren't exactly worth listing as their either very common or simply boring.

Not to hijack the thread but din't all the AWE32s come w/ the ASP chips? So whats so special about SB 16 w/ ASP (yes they are rare but if you want an SB 16 w/ ASP just buy an AWE32)

Not all models have it. Creative phased it out later in the card's life to cut costs and since it was well... pretty much useless.

Of course. This is also an open thread: feel free to post anything you like. That goes for everyone.

There are many versions of the AWE32 (and very often people list the 32 incorrectly as an AWE32). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_Blaster_AWE32

There is also an issue with Creative in general that their CT**** PCBs are not always consistent regarding lay-out: the same # may have come in many various layouts.

the ASP was "useless" because creative had restrictive licensing for the API... and it was also very expensive, that's why the only game that I know of that even uses it is TFX

BUT
I actually was persistent enough in hacking my drivers and got QSound to work out of it in windows at all times. So when i played games like DOOM through 98, it actually worked! I even got it to work on NT4. I'm more than happy to share this knowledge if there's interest

I bothered doing this because I was one of the few suckers who bought the ASP upgrade only later to find that it:
-wasn't needed for voice recoginition (voiceassist; a gimmick by today's standards... cool in the 90s)
-wasn't needed for text to speech
-creative dropped qsound support for all of their products like a hot potato in favor for the cheaper binaural "3D Sound" crap (and crap it was)

Since I didn't want to lose money on something so expensive I bought, I made it my mission to get qsound working and was pretty successful at it... it's too bad there's nothing I could do to make it work with the EMU8000 though except install the very old drivers... but most of us prefer reverb/chorus anyway... the qsound mattered more for sound effects than music :)
