Windows 3.0 upgrade to 3.11

It's been a while since I've used it but from memory you may be able just to point it to the directory where the nic driver is located in the directory the MS Dos Client is installed. If that doesn't work have look for the driver disk for your card- ftp://ftp.ulb.ac.be/pub/resulb/PC/3COMEtherDisk/

I tried the C:\net directory, the client software is there. I have the Etherlink III disk but don't know which directory I should be looking at.

If I leave the settings at the default, it completes the setup. It's adding the tcp/ip setting that fails. the second client disk has mostly compressed files. there is an expand.exe on the first disk. nwlink ipx compatible transport is the default setting

EDIT: Setup completes with NetBUEI setting only

OK, I've given up on the DOS networking and am installing WfW. I need the PS/1 because it is the halfway house between my PC 5150 and the Core i5. The PS/1 has a 3.5" FDD and the 5.25" FDD adapter unit. Listening to the thunk thunk of the FDD brings back memories.

EDIT: The setup program detected my Logitech Trackball by name.

Edit: I've set up WfW but only get the PS/1 in the connect network screen. I can ping the ps/1

That ftp site I linked to had the files you should have needed.

With regards to Wfw with the tcp/ip update then. That's a good start.

As for connection to you i5 you'll need to get input from other members as I'd hazard a guess you're running either Windows 7 or 8 something. I have XP boxes, You'll need to give a bit more detail about that system would be helpful.

First, thanks for all the help.

The Core i5 is running a dual boot system Win, 7 and win 8.1.1 I'm using the win 8 at the moment. the network is connected by a broadband router. the fact that I can ping both machines must mean I'm on the right track

EDIT: Booted into Win 7 and I can see the other machine from the other machine., if you get my drift

I can now copy to and from the PS/1, which was the goal all along. On a hardware note, the FDDs on the PS/1 work fine as do the original floppies. I think the weak link in the sneakernet was the USB FDD on the Core i5, and "new" floppies. I long formatted the floppies before copying files to them and that seemed to make them readable on the PS/1.

I may resume the DOS networking when I catch up on my chores. :(

Just an update. I installed a larger hard disk in the PS/1, 127 Meg instead of 42 Meg. Meg I ask you! installed MS-DOS 6.22 and WfW. Can network from Windows 7. I have to use the Win 7 Pc to send and receive from PS/1, can't do it from the PS/1.

Can't get win 8 to connect to ps/1 yet.

Just an update to show the state of play.

I've installed a 512 MB DOM in the PS/1 and installed MS-DOS 6.22 and WfW. I can network the PS/1 and see it from the Windows 8 PC.

I also installed a DOM in a 486 and MS-DOS 6.22 and WfW. I first used Windows 95 but could not get networking working.

The thing I like about getting those old pc's on to the network, is that it makes backing them up so easy. I have my 386, DOS 5, WFW 3.11 networked and I backup the C, D and E drives to my Windows 7 Pro PC. It has a 750 GB backup drive, as a third drive. A complete backup of my WFW computer is only about 200 MB. And that includes all three drives, one of which is a complete backup of the C drive! My Windows 95 computer is able to boot Ghost 2003, so I use that for backing up my Win 95 computer. I backup the C drive to the D drive. Then from the network, I copy THAT backup to my Window 7 computer, and erase the backup on the Windows 95 D drive, and use Ghost again to back up the D: drive over to the C drive, and repeat the process above. The only computer I can't get on the network is my early 386 which dual boots PC-MOS and DOS 3.3. But there is another redundant internal disk drive where I backup everything up to. I'm sort of a backup nut. :p
