Now that I have my 486 machine built, might there be a good reason to keep a 386?

lol I have the PC MOS 386 manuals, but no disks!
As I said in a previous post... http://www.vintage-computer.com/vcf...good-reason-to-keep-a-386&p=348156#post348156

As for Windows 95 - when it came in I found it was more common to see it on Pentium 75 and Pentium 100 machines - everyone I knew with a 486 (DX2/66 or DX4/100) stuck with Windows 3.1. My Pentium 75 shipped with Windows 3.1 but I got a Windows 95 upgrade voucher.

I have had a couple of 66's turn up where the owner had upgraded to Windows 95 though and it does run quite well.
My 486DX2-66 dual booted Win 3.1 and 95. :)

LOL! :p You jogged my aging little gray cells! You're absolutely right. Our Gigantor Gateway 2000 tower originally came with Windows 3.11 and when Windows 95 came out, I upgraded it. But it had come out only months after buying the computer, so I always thought of it as a Windows 95 machine. But to this day, it is an upgraded Windows 3.11 to Windows 95 system. It was never a clean install of Windows 95. I entertain thoughts of doing a clean Windows 95 install on it someday when I'm in a masochistic mood. ;)

Did a clean install of Windows 95B on my Presario 524, a 486DX2/66 just out of interest not that long ago. It went real smoothly.

When new, that was true. But mainly because by the time 95 was on the rise, new computers were mostly P1s

That doesn't mean you should follow that now unless you are very ridged about being period correct.
Windows 95 runs smoothly on my 486/33 with 24 MB of RAM and extremely fast on my 486-120

I suggest W95 on 486s because of far better software support. I don't bother with 3.x much anymore.

3.1 is a waste on a 486-100

"PC-MOS ......... there are no ways to get that OS that I know of"

Why? is it rare &/or valuable?

Seems to me I picked up an evaluation copy at a Comdex some years ago .....

Might still have it around somewhere....
