Blew in from the Canadian prairies

Welcome. I've never been to the Canadian prairies, but I'd like to go someday. Are there any particular older devices that you prefer to restore or collect? I like mostly IBM and compatible stuff, but I've got some Commodore 64 and a tiny bit of Apple stuff too.

How picky is NT 4.0 with CPUs?

I worked at a place that ran NT 4.0 on Dell Optiplex GX260 which are P4. Looking at Dell's website they will let you pick NT 4.0 on their drivers site all the way up to GX280 This same place that I worked had a bunch of IBM Thinkpads that were USB only, and they wanted to be able to use...

Board scans wanted for IBM 5160 cloning project

The board wouldn't quite fit on the scanner I had easy access to, so I scanned it in both directions. My older scanner seems better, and I think it will do longer documents, but it's in storage right now. They also seem a little fuzzy, perhaps because they cannot sit flat on the glass.

    Vintage Compaq Plus Humor

I wouldn't expect an HD drive (with an HD formatted disk) to work on a compaq portable, I don't think the controller supports HD. The keyboard cable uses a square plug, instead of a round DIN like most XT class keyboards. I think someone suggested at there was a different voltage present too...

Board scans wanted for IBM 5160 cloning project

I know I've got at least one loose board and another in an XT, that are the 64K to 256K variety, I'm not sure if they are the same though. Are you wanting the board placed on a scanner? Or will a photograph work? I don't think my scanner would handle a board that big, and I'm not sure of the...

What is this? Post Photos of Mystery Items Here (vintage computers only)

Might not be too far off, back then. I had a coworker in the 90s that worked for Phillips petroleum previously and they had a Cray (ymp I think) in the early 90s that was used for geological science stuff of some sort, finding oil. To keep the thing busy they used an IBM mainframe that was...

    Weird Intel Windows 3.1

I wonder if those disks are really QD. 7 disks is how many were used with windows 3.1 and HD 1.2MB floppies.

Run IBM XT or AT diagnostics disk on clone system?

There are other diagnostics out there too. I've got a set of the Landmark service diagnostics on floppy, but they would not work in your scenario, because they seem to only support intel or intel clone CPU for some reason. They would not run on an IBM motherboard I had installed a V20 in.

    Obsolete ICs datasheets

Many times there are catalogs from the manufacturer that have been archived. Bitsavers seems to have quite a few.

    IBM TopView?

Here are the system requirements from my copy:

    Core2Duo vs. Pentium D?

I'm not sure I agree that Windows 95 was terrible. It was pretty amazing when it came out. I remember installing it on my 486 and I was just amazed at how it detected all of the hardware and just worked. I have issues with Windows 10 and Windows 11, and mostly it's because the free or even...

Keyboards really are terrible today, I think.

Regular Macs are fond of those too. ;) It is one reason I hate MacOS. I like to call them “long cut keys” and I feel like they might give you arthritis.

    ServerWorks and Win2K Server

They have wheels on them, if they are good racks. I've moved fully loaded racks around in a data center a many times. I've even had some shipped fully loaded from one site to another. Normally really heavy things like storage would come racked halfway or 2/3 just to reduce the risk of damage...

Keyboards really are terrible today, I think.

I bought a redragon K605 as a joke because I think it’s hilarious. It’s a 200% keyboard. Almost useless, but I think it might be good if you work wearing welding gloves or something. ;)
