RS-232 Then and Now (Notes and Discussion)

I wasn't sure if the topic of RS-232 would be all that interesting - but I've had a lot of positive feedback on the recent discussion about it at VCF. I have the slides (and extra sub-notes and details) archived here (useful maybe if anyone wants to replicate or compare to the RS-232...

    IBM 5110 RAM timings

Hey, @apl-vade-mecum ping'd me and reminded me about this thread. First, wow @Pitou this is incredible work and collaboration, and brave of you to get so very hands on into the memory board of these systems. Seeing your screen shot with the 44KB RWS listed on the console (and extra 4KB used...

    Perifractic wants to buy Commodore

Fair, that's only if he chooses to become a publicly traded company (to try to help pay for things). Imagine that, Commodore ringing the bell at the opening someday. Dell went private and back to public over its lifetime. None of the new retro systems (that I'm aware of) have become...

    Perifractic wants to buy Commodore

I wasn't into the Commodore scene in the 1980s - I grew up in the Tandy Color Computer "ecosystem." But I think all this recent activity is great! I wish Tandy would even get back into the game - down the street from me is Tandy Leather, with a huge store along I-20 selling leather cow...

Quake won't run on 486-100, is it just me?

Yeah, the best 486DX laptop I have is the Toshiba Satellite T1960CT (very compact, DX2/50). Just in general 486DX's (laptops) just don't seem as easy to find these days (which just leads me to think not as many were made)

Quake won't run on 486-100, is it just me?

I have one of those Logitech WingMan Thrust 3D force-feedback sticks, but it's not very good (at least for flight sims, the range seems unusually limited -- and I can't find any DOS software that really uses the force feedback feature; maybe it's more suited to Win95/DirectX stuff). And I think...

Quake won't run on 486-100, is it just me?

Main appeal to me is less power and noise. Don't need a fan, can get by with a good heatsink on the CPU. These days I'm the opposite of an overclocker (until it comes to rendering video, then every core better be sizzling). The appeal is also just representing the historical period of what...

Quake won't run on 486-100, is it just me?

So, I know this post is ancient - but I wanted to report about how I was recently using a 486DX4/100 setup when using an ISA 16-bit VGA (a 1994 Diamond SpeedStar 64), and concur that Quake wasn't running very well (CF emulated IDE drive and SB16 audio). But the mainboard I am using has 3x...

Does anyone have experience with these new Parallel SD card devices on vintage computers?

I had trouble using SDDRV.SYS and SDLPT off the parallel port that was attached on an MDA (monochrome) card. It worked fine when attached to the parallel port of the main system (which had the default port number). So I'm not sure if the issue was using a non-default port number, or some...

Missing Operating System - what's going on here?!?

Just odd that it only impacted the "boot-ability" of the drive. Otherwise, once booted (from floppy), the CF content was readable and runnable as normal. I suppose that matches to the PC-hardware setup experience throughout most of the 90s - finding a compatible combination of the particular...

Missing Operating System - what's going on here?!?

Sort of solved: I swapped the CF card from a 128MB card to a larger capacity 512MB CF card. The 512MB CF card was not already formatted. So I booted from the DOS 6.20 boot disk, did FORMAT C: /S Then removed the disk and rebooted. The drive still would not boot. So I booted back to the...

Missing Operating System - what's going on here?!?

Hey gang, sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm having this same issue and don't see this one really resolved. I can boot from the (physical) 3.5 disk drive with MS-DOS 6.20. Then I can go to C: and access the file system of the hard drive just fine. This drive even has Windows 3.0...

Does anyone have experience with these new Parallel SD card devices on vintage computers?

Uh... is this about SDLPT? I have one, and yes it's only about 20KB/sec, but it's quite convenient - I can hot swap the SD-card. I don't always have the NIC setup or want to deal with FTP (IP, bin, hash, putm, then move files around - it's ok for a few files, but not whole directory...

Does anyone have experience with these new Parallel SD card devices on vintage computers?

Have a couple of these, still working great. Could use a couple more. I've not seen them prebuilt or available for awhile now (few months). Any builders out there?
