Ok Im getting to trying FreeDOS late in the game but could use some help. In a nutshell I have these outdated laptops that I think would make good retro DOS machines and thought FREEDOS was the best way to make this happen.

I downloaded the 1.3 Bootable ISO. I boot the ISO and it detected everything (SATA DVD Drive using the El Torino driver). I did a full install and then rebooted. Now the dvd drive cant be detected. IT doesnt seem to be even trying the El Torino driver either. There really werent options I could choose when installing the OS so I dont know what I could have chosen. Any help would be appreciated.

Let's start with the basics for any 86-DOS clone: What do the CONFIG.SYS/AUTOEXEC.BAT (FDCONFIG.SYS/FDAUTO.BAT) have in them?

You should have a device driver for the DVD drive and the MSCDEX clone, SHSUCDX, loading in order to get any access to the DVD-ROM drive.

You might want to set up the UDVD2 device driver.
