11/73 Bootstrap for BDV-11, DU, DL, DD etc...

That's the one board I don't have, the MXV11-B2. The quad CPU boards don't have this bootstrap problem, i.e. 11/23+, 11/53, 11/83, but I would like to be able to have a boot board for the dual width CPU's. The other is the 11/03, I would like to boot DU: device directly, currently I boot a DY: device (emulated RX02) and then boot the DU: device.
When you start RT-11 and do a SHOW ALL part of the output is the type of CPU you are running, how do you tell which CPU is present? Is it a single op code or is some kind of witch craft trickery?
Its a bit of both - some processors have MFPT - Move from processor type - which is great if you're using one that has the instruction - then its down to looking for differences in the CPU and instruction support...

I would like to keep my BDV11 board in its original condition, but would like to boot these extra devices: DU, MU, MS, DD. The documentation for the BDV11 implies that if you enter an unknown nemonic; (it only understands DX, DY, DK, DL) then it looks for a user ROM to execute from. The details are about that. Does anyone know anything about this? I've seen pictures of BDV11's on google that show not only the standard DEC masked ROM's installed in E48, E53 but other ROM's on the board. Maybe they are accessible via switch settings.

Standard BDV11 bootstraps either don't do DU - or won't work on an 11/73, if you use the KDF11-B boot code in 8 x 2716 in a standard BDV11... you want the jmdhuse board emulating an MXV11-B and ROMs which doesn't work in a BDV-11, sadly - Or fix the odd address trap in the KDF11-B bootstrap (Please!) which is what breaks the 11/73...

I vaguely remember that there is a switch setting to disable the test or diag that causes the issue with the KDF11-B code - but not looked into that recently!

Lots of info on the first page of this thread...

To make a good BDV11 bootstrap, you need the ROMs from a Baydel STBC-11 board, 2 x 2764 and put them in 8 x 2716 and in later versions, it boots anything... If anyone can find one and share the ROMs, it would be appreciated!!! I did it back in the 1980s and it worked a treat..

Folks,

there is the Camintonn CM-MXV11-B which supports both - 23 and 73 with a load of boot options - including network boot.
Eventually this may help. See pictures...
If wanted i can dump the Eproms, this may take some time; atm i only have single burners without peecee connection.
FYI: cpu type 3 is the 23, type 5 is the 73 cpu board.

Just like in the Crocodile Dundee movie, " Now that's a bootstrap! " I've been working through the stock BDV11 Boot Rom to see what is going on. It seems to be a high wire act to be swapping 128 word segments in and out. The Camintonn boot code looks to be the most comprehensive I've ever seen. It would be useful if you could read the ROM's so they could be disassembled and understood.

Hmmm, the board name suggests that it is modeled after an actual DEC MXV11-B. I wonder if the boot ROMs would work in my BDV/MXV board when it is set in MXV mode. I would love to get a dump of the EPROMs... If you were closer I could send you two 2764s and you could just duplicate them... Jon.

Hi Both - That DOES look like a great bootstrap for an MXV11-B and emulation - sadly not for a BDV11 though DTIH - I'm in the UK so if it's quicker and easier for me to send and cheaper for you to return a couple of 2764 then just shout! - I can read them and upload here for the common good!

Hi Wildfire... So - If it is easier to send you some EPROMS to copy and return to me in the UK, please let me know - drop me a DM to discuss if you prefer? Or let me know what works for you...
