Its a bit of both - some processors have MFPT - Move from processor type - which is great if you're using one that has the instruction - then its down to looking for differences in the CPU and instruction support...That's the one board I don't have, the MXV11-B2. The quad CPU boards don't have this bootstrap problem, i.e. 11/23+, 11/53, 11/83, but I would like to be able to have a boot board for the dual width CPU's. The other is the 11/03, I would like to boot DU: device directly, currently I boot a DY: device (emulated RX02) and then boot the DU: device.
When you start RT-11 and do a SHOW ALL part of the output is the type of CPU you are running, how do you tell which CPU is present? Is it a single op code or is some kind of witch craft trickery?
