Unfortunately, I never got to experience running or using one before. Do they still exist for nostalgic purposes and where can I get info on accessing one.

There are lots. Fido is still happening and there is an active community. You can see my (very stale) link at the bottom of this post and find lots of boards which you can call right now! Interestingly there are more modern versions running in the east. A very famous Taiwanese one called PTT has 1.5 million users and gets 150,000 users online during peak hours. That's a long shot from the little boards that people run out of their homes, but those are still popular using telnet. What is almost gone is the dialup ones, although there's still enough to keep you busy. Have fun!

Check out:

They also maintain a list of dialup BBSes...last time I checked, there was something over 30 left in North America. I dial/SSH/telnet to Grex (+1 (734) 484-0512) pretty often for e-mail and their message boards. They also support X/Y/Zmodem and Kermit, as well as connections down to 1200 baud, so I can actually use their services with my vintage machines.

Wow, thanks for the info guys! I don't have a landline here at my house, but my folks do, maybe I'll swing over there this afternoon! I have a compaq portable that has several old communication programs and has a modem installed on it so that's what I'll be using.

So of course your quick answer is "yes! :)" and once you poke around a bit you can find out a few sites you might like that maintain them. The first one I found years go was http://www.bbsmates.com/ which a lot of past bbs's are registered as well as their users just to reminisce. It also has a link for currently active boards. There are a few lists out there. One of our members here used to maintain the list of active Commodore (64? or general) bbses that were active. Can't quite recall if it was Wiskow or Willowmoon or who.. but there are still opportunities out there for both dialup or telnet bbsing.

My land line is barely used anymore. The only one who calls it is my dad. I'm tempted to put my old board back up for a while since I still need the line for my alarm system

I always liked playing the board games and downloading the shareware files from BBS's. While there's no need to download files from the shareware era anymore thanks to the Internet, there are still door games that I like to play.

My favorite was Seth Able Robinson's Legend of the Red Dragon. We still have a very active community at http://lord.nuklear.org, and also at http://lord.stabs.org.

There is a full-blown Synchronet (telnet) BBS that I frequent called The Gargoyle's Landing (telnet gargoyleslanding.com) - I play LoRD there as well, though there are dozens of other games available.

Come on by and check 'em out! - We're always looking for new LoRD players at both Nuklear and Stabs!
