Bought it at my neighbors tagsale recently apparently it was in his basement since the 90's! It works pretty well but I want to get under the hood doing some cleaning and restoring of my own, I happen to be new here, I was told about VCF by my other neighbor. My question is What tools should I get specifically Bits, Key pullers, anything from soldering and such, I just don't know how I should start, maybe a list of tools I should get and soe tips, Im pretty knowledgable with computers and fix consoles for fun sometimes but I jsut want to make sure I am doing it right! thanks!

(Will provide pictures if asked! Im also looking to do some Retrobiting on it, what are some good techniques?)

Well, I'll start. One of my favorite kits and comes with a case. Fairly cheap too.

Get the best solder station you can afford. I personally use this one:

They have this newer model and it's cheaper, but have no idea what it's like since I've never used it.

My most often used tool is one of those cheapo screwdrivers they sell near the registers at Home Depot. I believe the Buck Brothers 4 in 1. It has 2 reversible bits so you get a large and small straight slot and a large and small phillips. I believe the newer ones are the same size bit so now you get just one size nut driver. Its great in a pocket and durable.

You will eventually want to get some isopropyl alcohol, q-tips, and disinfecting wipes for cleaning.

One idea that you likely already have the tools for is a cell phone. Photograph everything as you start a step in case you forget where or how something goes. Its also nice as a journal to track your progress and see before & after.

Actually, probably the best advice anyone can give. Do you know how many times I've forgotten how certain wiring goes and a cell phone photo saved the day? So important.

Hi Linden, the 800xl is a nice computer. It was my first and favorite computer so I'm biased. :)

The Camera is a real good idea. Not sure you'll need the soldering iron right away. But do be careful of the keyboard ribbon, it's fragile and brittle.
