HP 700/44 terminal

That's where I got with it.

I'm at the point right now that perhaps it can go for spares- the keyboard is good, the tube is excellent with no burn in and with nice white phosphor.

Any takers for parts?
 
Having a thought, I have a few more tools at my disposal now.

Gonna have a go at finding the fault again. Then parts if not.
 
Problem is in the switch-mode supply, from what I can see.

Gonna work on that and see if I can get it running correctly.
 
If you do eventually give up on it and part it out I would be interested in the CRT. I made a stupid mistake and managed to damage the CRT of an HP 700 series terminal I have when I was opening it up to fix a sticking power switch.
 
Found the issue with the voltages and got them to:

+38 (guessing that's about where it should be)
+5.6 (+5 rail)
+12.0 (+12 rail)
-11.2 (-12 rail)

No life and I'm not going to expend and more effort into it, so if you want it, it's yours. Let me know :)

Yeah, the insides not being all held securely in place after the case is open is what caught me out with the one I have. I didn't realize that before parts fell out and the cable to the deflection yoke of the CRT got pulled hard enough to break parts of the yoke. The CRT glass itself might still be intact.

I wonder if it would cost much more to ship the CRT in the whole terminal case instead of removing the CRT and packing just the CRT to survive shipping? Or whatever you would be easiest and seem the best to you. If you want to estimate shipping costs you could use the zip code 98008 for Bellevue WA.
 
Yeah, I was thinking about that. You want the keyboard too? It was a warranty replacement in 2001. It's not in bad shape, bit dirty is all.
 
I use a keyboard with a different layout, the C3340A style keyboard with the Menu and User/System keys in the middle of the top function key row. My terminal is a 700/96. Not sure how much different that is from the 700/44. I wonder if it just firmware differences, or if the logic boards are significantly different.
 
Haven't forgotten about this, just haven't left the house... You know how that goes.

Don't have a suitable box for either part right now...

Had to go out so I picked up what I hope should be a suitable box for the CRT (nice thick double wall carton).

Board went off to Al.

Keyboard still available.

Well, that all fell apart at the end of the year.

Apologies, things all kinda went to hell here.

I've still got the crt, I'll see about getting it boxed to ship, and price it up.

Hi Phil,

I read your thread with great interest... I am restoring an HP 928 aka 700/60. Your pictures look very familiar! I'm searching for any service manual.

My 928 powered on ok. The power switch went crunch. This is the common problem with ME5A switches--inside, a tiny plastic nub breaks.

For the ME5A switch, I used a C&K NE182AEEP6AMP. Wired the pins to the board.

The dead CR2032 was the spot-welded 3-pin type. Replacement was a bit wider. There is a middle thru-hole for use with a 2-pin type.

Replaced the cracked RIFA caps. 0.015 uF and 4700 pF.

I dumped the EPROM, then put in a socket. The EPROM pins are crimped to snap into a PCB. I had to flatten them to keep them in the socket.

Unfortunately, it did not work when I put it back together. The raster is collapsed into one horizontal line. I'm evaluating suggestions on that.
