This is listed as P/N RTRNF1644CEZZ on the Service Manual. Searching on HR Diemen's site (www.hrdiemen.com) has not yielded any results, even with partial part number provided... any ideas what a generic replacement would it be? My CM-8 is dead on the water

Did you reflow all of the solder joints going to the flyback? Thermal cycling often causes them to crack loose from the board.

Found that the HR Diemen (Spanish company) part number 8218 is a replacement for the CM-8's flyback (https://www.hrdiemen.com/reparation/flyback/scheme/8218), but after inquiring I found that part had been discontinued and the lone one I saw on Ebay was by a Spanish seller that would not ship overseas... bummer; my Ebay search has not returned any hits ever since.

Unfortunately (I say), the solder joints an board traces in the high voltage area are clean, re-did a few just to be sure... harsh operation conditions remained
