Hi all,

A buddy of mine is trying to find a Commodore PET IEEE-488 cable to hook his 4032 to a MSD SD-2 disk drive.

Anyone know of a reasonably-priced source for IEEE-488 cables?

Thanks!

Hi Earl,

Huge fan of the podcast!
I recently constructed a PET IEEE-488 cable with parts from this place:
http://www.halted.com/
It's an electronics surplus store in Santa Clara, CA. They have a large number of the amphenol connectors for the drive side, the edge connectors for the PET, and I just used a ribbon cable to connect them. On the amphenol side soldering was not even necessary since the connector had the little teeth on the back side to pierce the ribbon cable.
This place does do shipping, and while I don't see these parts on their website, the people there are very helpful and would most likely go grab the parts for you if you call them up.
Also, I end up going here every couple of weeks or so to scrounge parts for hacking projects so if you like I can grab the parts for your friend next time I'm there.
Looking forward to the next installment of retrobits!

It's a 24-pin edge connector, the pin spacing is, I believe, 0.312" (7.92mm). It will be labeled as a 12-position, 2-row connector. They were a little tricky to find in there, they're back in the corner near the ribbon cable spools. It's a good idea to just measure the width of the PET IEEE connector on the board just to make sure you have the right one.

Thanks for the link, that looks right from the documentation in the newsletter. Now that I think about it, .312" would be only about 3 pins per inch, which doesn't seem right.
Found a product photo on digi-key, which looks right spacing-wise (but with the wrong number of pins):

Best bet if E is going to Halted is to just draw an outline of the PET side on a piece of paper and take it with him.

Looks like a Digi-Key EDC305242-ND if you don't mind solder tail instead of eyelet.

Yeah, I have exactly one spare cable with slight damage to the plastic of the card edge connector. Earl sent me a PM which I haven't had time to reply to yet, sorry. I will get back to him in the weekend, if he can accept a mostly working cable with a minor physical defect. Of course a bit of tape will seal up the damage even if it won't look as pretty.

Thanks everybody for the replies! I really appreciate it. For my own cable, I went the DIY route, and it worked out well. I think my buddy wants to buy one pre-made, but I'll see. I'll refer him to this thread, and we'll go from there.

Again, thanks for all the options!

- Earl
