win3.1 installation disk 7 of 7

His problem is that the metal hub has separated from the disk and he wants to reattach it, not replace the disk.

If he does reattach it, it'd be best if it were attached in the right place. Recall that the index relates to the hub. I'm not saying it's not possible, but a bit of care is necessary.

Well I tried the gorilla glue method, and it did work at attaching the cog back to the media. I used some half dried up stuff I had with a needle, worked really well! Bad news though, machine can't read it, wants to just format the diskette. Maybe its not at the correct position. Dammit!

How do you figure out how to position the cog? *scratches head. Any way I can tell under a magnifying lens?

It's possible for some hardware to recover even over the mispositioned disk--you just use a controller that ignores the index (or you could simply isolate the pin on the interface) and then read the sectors one by one.

However, I assume that you know which side of the cookie was "up"...

Yes, I never pulled it apart, so the side is correct at least! :D I totally brainfarted on the index. I should have known that being an A+ tech! >.<

Any idea what pin I would isolate or what controllers could ignore the index? Was trying to image it with my usb floppy drive, but will use a vintage machine, and even sacrifice a floppy cable if necessary! :D

Hello Again!

Remember me, the OP? Sorry for not replying sooner. Crossed wires.

Anyways, I live in Ireland. (Faith and begora!) The floppies came with a Dell DX4200 or some model no like that. The disks are light grey with a white label. I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure it does not say Dell anywhere on the floppies.

True, I don't have Disk 7, so I can't be 100% sure it says "Disk 7 of 7" on the label, but all the others say "Disk 1 of 7", "Disk 2 of 7", etc.

The Win3.1 installer didn't ask for Disk 7. But you might be prompted to insert Disk 7 if you connected your PC to some obscure printer. And I believe there were some European fonts and such on Disk 7 as well.

Or at least that's how I remember it. It's been a while...

hah
just had delivered a $3 pack of 40 used floppy disks.
one has hand written "Microsoft Windows 3.1 Disk 7 - Extra Drivers"

I will check it when I get home and post up the contents (provided it still reads).
It's 7.20am-ish here, so give me like 12 hours to get back.

Yes it has the same files mentioned above, and the oemsetup.inf matches.
It has bad sectors / corrupted data (CRC errors during copy). But most of it is still there.

Very interesting, thanks. :) What's really aggravating is that my disk 7 also has a hand written label, despite 1 to 6 being from Microsoft. I don't think we're at the bottom of this investigation just yet.

I note that we live in very different parts of the world, so the provenance of this disk is most curious.

VIOLA (almost)

Looks like the 5.25" HD's have 7 in the set . . .

A quick check on eBay this morning shows that all of the MS 3.5" sets have just 6 disks.

That was already covered way, way back in the second post(first reply) in this thread.

Stone: Lighten up a little - ... Sorry that I seem to be boring you.
Oh, oh, someone else who dares to comment on your posts... wanna punch him in the nose too? ;-)
Have you ever thought that maybe you could "lighten up a little"?
BTW, this is a "VIOLA":

I do like the price of that set on eBay; if this sort of thing keeps up I may be able to retire on the junk in my basement ;-)

There's a local chap having a good clear out of his "tardis". He's been on an overseas trip, shouted the missus a spruce up and whole manner of stuff. At least two members here have bee helping him on his quest ;).

Thanks again Mike for keep me on the straight and narrow. BTW, I never wanted to punch you in the nose but I wouldn't mind if someone else did. Peace!
