Need help identifying......

Wondering if anyone can help me identify this piece of equipment. All I can find on it is MSI 2741 and what you see (hopefully) in the pics added here.

Judging from the connectors and the labeling, I'd say it was a protocol converter from Bisync/SNA/SDLC to async (or vice versa) . A peek inside might be more interesting.
