Got my first 486! Now, what do you do with one?

I think that Compaq had PCMCIA slot, i have two PCMCIA NIC(one wired, one wireless!!!) to exchange with a TurtleBeach ISA card. I guess you need Win95 for the 3COM 3CCE89ET, and win98 for the D-Link DWL-650 not DWL-650+.

I had a portable compaq contura 100 mhz that went up in smoke, do not remember model number looked like this.

So i do not need these guys anymore. I am not sure i got the wireless up though because i wanted WAP on router and this only support WEP 128-bit encryption.

Use it well, it took me almost 2 years to find a 486 (in San Diego!) because of repeated bad luck. You should definitely play DOOM or Wolfenstein 3d if you like shooting games but if you like puzzle games, you should try the Indiana Jones games or last half of darkness which is more of a horror game. If you think you have trouble with windows 3.1 you can try this: www.calmira.de/
It gives you a windows 95 interface and you launch it by clicking on an icon in the program group so you can choose to remain in windows 3.1 or launch the new interface. DOOM doesn't need a sound card to play, wolfenstein 3d can make sounds from the internal speaker(every computer has one). I don't think 486 laptops have a sound card unless it's a DX4.

Try to get your hands on a Disney Sound System or a Covox adapter so you can get some better sound (as I'm pretty sure the Contura Aeros don't have sound cards, being laptops in that era, esp. at that size). Things like Wolf3d support them, and it sounds pretty good.

Regarding Calmira, I'm developing it actively and am working on 3.4 - it has one notable new feature: a box for "run this in DOS mode" which does exactly what it says, then returns to Windows when done. Invaluable if you use the machine to do DOS and Windows games, as you can then launch both from Windows.

You can find my version at http://www.yushatak.com/calmira.html
