Yes, I have noticed that noise with my AT. I'm sure it's due to the solenoid at the back of the drive.
Yes, I noticed there was quite a bit of upset at the release of the PS/2. Most of this documented in the Computer Chronicles episode.
Also, my F AT keyboard was produced in the UK, opposed to the standard US so maybe they had the factory open longer there like wit the Model M's where US opererations were spun off into Lexmark and then sold to Unicomp in 96. However the IBM factory in Scotland continued producing Model M until 1999.
Also, I've found an IBM branded copy of DOS 3.30 that looks to be a perfect fit for the 5150.
