What is a Microsoft "Lifetime Pro License"?

Back in January, MS was advertising a "Lifetime Pro License" for Windows 11. Exactly what did that mean? Will MS support Windows 11 for the next 50 years?

Pacific Northwest Again: Toshiba Infinia Intouch USB modules

I've still got perhaps 20 of these in shrink-wrap. I have no use for them. I'll take $5 each+shipping. Now, before you get all worked up on this: Yes, these are USB; perhaps they're the earliest USB devices marketed. So they're probably not going to work with anything but the original...

Keyboards really are terrible today, I think.

Yesterday, I dropped off a few Fedex packages at the local OfficeMax (more convenient than taking them to the Fedex Store and I can also grocery shop in the same mall). You know, OfficeMax, the place that sells $150 chair mats and $30 plastic milk crates. I went down the "keyboard" aisle and...

Don't know how many know about this LCD monitor site

http://15khz.wikidot.com/ Note that several NEC monitors do support 15KHz horizontal, even though the manual says it doesn't. And many are still available; e.g.1970VX.

Did MacOS ever have any sort of scripting ability?

Here's the situation--I've got a lot (>400) Adobe Persuasion files to convert to PDFs. Right now, I can do this one file at a time (open file, export, close under Persuasion 4.0). I'd like to automate the process. Is there any way to do this? Is there an ability scan through a volume and...

Pacific Northwest Anyone interested in an Adaptec/Trantor MA-348 Parallel/SCSI adapter? Offers.

Got one--haven't used it in years, but drivers are still available in the EZ-SCSI package. Powered by the terminator power of the device, IIRC. I used it many times to interface a SCSI CD-ROM to old PCs without any IDE capability. Make an offer, if interested.

Revisited Sheepshaver after a few years away. I'm impressed.

Have to handle some data written in the 90's and backed up on SyQuest 200MB carts. Necessitates running some programs of the time that are no longer existent. The attached screenshot is MacOS 8.5 displayed on a 21" (4:3) monitor on a host system running Linux Bookworm. Boots and runs faster...

    Component reuse -- it's a real thing

I offer this pointing out that there is a market for reclaimed components: https://www.electronicdesign.com/blogs/the-briefing/article/21284568/electronic-design-jabil-wants-to-start-recovering-components-and-reusing-them-in-electronics I should note that Jabil is a major manufacturer.

    Zonet ZPW4000 setup?

I've got the manual, not the CD for this wireless print server. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to make it up or even how to talk to it. It's got the IP address of 192.168.0.10 printed on the label. I've reset it, tried hardwired and wireless configurations and nothing. What's...

DECMate II vs. DECMate III WPS disk structure.

On the RX50 disks used in both the DECMate II and III there appears to be a substantial difference in recording format. The DM II WPS records 12 bits out of 16, but DM III WPS appears to not clear 4 bits in the second byte. For example: DM II WPS: 00001400 00 00 02 00 08 08 08 e7 00 01...

    Interesting tidbit on reading floppies

I process a lot of floppy disks, as you probably know. For the garden-variety 5.25" disks, I use the closest to hand. I had a bunch (44) of RX50 (DECmate iI) floppies to read. All read perfectly, save one, where the software insisted that the drive wasn't ready. For this batch, I was using...

    New Samsung 36GB DRAM chip

Bit of curiosity--Imation SuperDisk difference between blue and clear cases?

Like the subject says, I've got SuperDisk drives with the blue "nose" and ones with the "clear" one. Other than the color, is there any practical difference? I can't tell any. Were the blue noses intended to go with the iMac G3?

    Public Brand Software disks--worth archiving?

I'm going through more junk and discovered a number (9) of "Public Brand Software" disks for PC; I'm guessing late 80s-early 90s. Are they worth archiving, or can I safely toss these? (all are DS2D 3.5" media). Here's a sample:

De-junking. I have a complete, shrink-wrapped copy of Borland Paradox for Windows 4.5 (includes manuals--remember those--printed on real paper?). Only the box has been opened--never used. Probably could go media mail rates. Otherwise, the recycler get its. A bunch of PC AT (5170) and...

Are these suitable for cache RAM?

I noted that Electronics Goldmine has a shipment of these 32KB 45 nsec SRAMs. Are these of use to anyone looking for cache SRAM for their 386/486 boards? Just wondering... https://theelectronicgoldmine.com/products/g27766

Sony and Seagate teaming up for hard disk production?

I ran across this news item in my morning email: https://www.reuters.com/technology/sony-partner-with-seagate-hard-disk-drives-used-ai-nikkei-2024-02-16/ Not a lot of detail here--I assume that we're not talking about spinning rust-type drives. What are they?
