I don't know if this card ever got known outside France but in the mid 80's in France we got the excellent 128K 80 col RVB card whose name was "chat mauve" that came with a basic extension called purplesoft and later Arlequin.
With these new basic extensions we could program very easily the double hires mode with some more special features.
the trouble was basic was slow and ever slower with the double hires mode.
So I tried to use some basic compilers such as TASC or Einstein but of course it crashed since the compiler didn't know the extented basic instruction that was offered with the Chat Mauve card.
Unless you know a way to integrate the new functions in the compiler ?
