Compaq LTE 5300 ESS1688 audio shown as playing but there is a total silence in Windows 98

Hello!

I got really weird behavior of ESS1688 audio on my laptop Compaq LTE 5300.
ES1688 device is shown as working in Device Manager.
I can play sound files but there is no sound as if volume was muted, and of course volume level is max.

To make things even more weird, some DOS games like Wolf3D, Doom, Heretic, Dune 2 plays sound and FX effects (both in Win98 or DOS) but some like Heroes III or VPREG (Mod file player) have the same behavior like in Win98, showing file as playing but no sound.
I tried couple drivers but behavior didn't change.

Are you using a VxD driver, or a WDM driver? If you're using a VxD, try changing the port settings and the interrupt. If you're using a WDM driver, see if there's a different driver version available.
