I'm also reminded of some of the ol' backup tape-drives which were hung off from the floppy controller, but didn't show up as a letter, they could only be seen by the backup software.

My understanding is that the use of a floppy controller was simply a convenient way of getting commands/data to/from the tape drive.
Obviously a tape drive that mimicked a floppy drive (and thus appeared as a drive letter) would be way too slow.

I have one of those old drives, by Colorado or something. It's plugged into my ATjr (actually an AMTjr after IBM made them change the name). Good luck finding working tapes for it though I guess.
