My understanding is that the use of a floppy controller was simply a convenient way of getting commands/data to/from the tape drive.Terry Yager said:I'm also reminded of some of the ol' backup tape-drives which were hung off from the floppy controller, but didn't show up as a letter, they could only be seen by the backup software.

Obviously a tape drive that mimicked a floppy drive (and thus appeared as a drive letter) would be way too slow.
