That's interesting. I have a couple of each variety and all of them are... gray. :)
Well, so do I and of course there are lots of generic null-modem cables and even parallel-to-parallel cables out there; BTW they're also used by post-98 Windows for DCC Direct-connect, the Windows successor to Interlnk.

AFAIK the genuine LapLink cables were blue and yellow and the serial cable was double-headed (9 & 25) on both ends, but the important distinction is whether it's either a full 7-wire null-modem serial cable with appropriate female (socket) connectors at each end or a special cross-over ('null-modem') parallel cable with male (pin) connectors, not to be confused with an ordinary straight-through male-to-male cable like those used by scanners, ZIP drives, switch boxes, etc.
