Is a vintage part more expensive now than new?

Hello,

Sometimes, while searching on e-Bay, I keep having chuckles.....for example, a search for "XT IDE" reveals controller boards more expensive now than when new about 20 years ago.

There are many good buyers and sellers on on-line auction sites who are reasonable in their expections. Some others, well, are greedy.

Any other un-reasonable asking prices for 20 year old computer part?

I was looking in to prices of things from the past, and recalculating them with the rate of inflation to match todays prices.

The original owner of my IBM XT paid over 5000 pounds for it new (20MB hard drive, 640kB, enhanced keyboard, 5153 CGA, network card). The same 5000 pounds in today's value would be around 12,000. You could buy a nice car for that!!!

Unfortunately, a lot of the sellers on eBay think that if a part is rare, then it will fetch a lot of money. But there are always stupid people who will pay it! I always do notice that it is always the same sellers selling the same things over and over again.
