So now I got LDOS working with my trs-80 and EI it seems that I have to leave the LDOS disk in the drive for any dos commands to work.So how do I go about getting a dir or running a file on another disk when dos doesn't work without the ldos disk in.Do I HAVE to run with 2 drives?

I've been going thru a similar (but not parallel) struggle. Search the .pdf of the 5.31 docs for "minimal". This should take you to the "System Overlay" section and where minimal system requirements are discussed.

For instance, sys5/sys is only used for debugging. About sys7/sys it says, in part, "It performs specialized functions that may not be needed in the operation of specific applications. Use the PURGE command to eliminate this overlay if you decide it is not needed on a working SYSTEM diskette."

Etc.

Good luck!

Mike
