Looking for Canon PJ-1080a drivers / software

Last year I picked up a Canon PJ-1080A color inkjet printer for use with my Lisa. It works great!

https://youtu.be/ARaV4aJuaE4

I'd like to use this printer on some other systems, but I can't find any software that supports it :( There is a Windows 3.1 driver for the Integrex ColourJet 132 version of this printer floating around the web, but I just tried it and it only produces garbage output (from Win 3.11 at least). Tandy also sold it as the CGP-220.

What would be really great is if someone happened to have drivers for this printer, but my searching has turned up almost nothing.

Thanks,

-J

There were drivers for the Amiga and RiscOS depending on how far afield you are willing to go. I will try looking for a Word for DOS PRD file but I think Lotus 1-2-3 had a driver for it and you might also check out Harvard Graphics.

I'd like to stay in the PC field since that's what I have. There's mention of a windows 2.0 driver... was that built into windows?

FWIW, though it's mentioned this printer can emulate an Epson JX, however mine prints garbage.

I checked the disks for Windows 2 and didn't see a driver for Canon printer. I remember that CompuServe had multiple screens worth of additional drivers for Win 2 but I do not know of any archive of them.

GEM: Maybe its here http://www.seasip.info/Gem/Drivers/printer.html I don't know how the Canon Bubblejets relate to the PJ-1080

If Archive.org comes back, try https://web.archive.org/web/19981206005153/http://www2.magmacom.com/~russrite/Canon_Drivers/ Supposedly there is (or was) a 1080_win.zip somewhere there possibly with a different date.

I think some DOS presentation packages included drivers for the PJ but I don't have disks at hand to check.

One other file I can't find but see listed in a shovelware CD index is
CJTDLASM.ZIP 4252 12-14-90 Cannon PJ-1080A inkjet graphics PrtSc/ASM
from http://cd.textfiles.com/pcmedic/menu/otherprt.txt

I've been to that site on the Archive. I couldn't find anything for the PJ :( The bubble jet printers seem to be completely different.

So I poked around textfiles... looks like that's just a reference the crawler got, but the .zip file isn't on the disc?

The .zip is on the full version of the disc. https://archive.org/details/PC_Medic_Advanced_Diagnostic_Software_PC_Medical_Center Seems a bit silly downloading 170 MB of shareware to get a short ASM file that can turned into a simple print utility but it is about the only program I can find that knows anything about the PJ-1080.

Thanks. I got the .asm file off the disc, not sure what to do with it though

I also tried to find the control reference for the ColourJet 132 but didn't turn up anything... I'd like to compare it to the Canon reference.

Take the .asm file through a matching assembler to create a .COM file. If the resultant program works, you will be able to print something. Parsing through the assembly code might provide hints on how to modify other printer drivers. Most of the high end word processors available during the 80s had tools to tweak drivers to work with unsupported printers. Budget about 6 months if you want to try to create a Windows printer driver; the documentation is that poor and many, many functions are required.

I have the IBM 3852 version of this printer. There is a Windows 3.0 driver that I can confirm works mostly in Windows 9X (I haven't tried in in 3.X yet). I don't know if it's compatible with the Canon version. I could post a ROM image if anyone wants to turn theirs into an IBM 3852.

I'd *love* to get a copy of that driver and the ROM! (And what all the many DIP switches are set as inside your printer).

Speaking of that, I should grab a copy of the ROM in my machine.

I'll extract the ROM and post it along with the driver. I wouldn't mind a copy of the Canon ROM in case I have a need for it.

I'll also make note of all my dip switches. I recall there are at least 16 inside the machine.

The Canon ROM works with the Apple Lisa. The IBM variant of this printer seems to be somewhat more available, so putting a Canon ROM into it would be a nice way to get color printing on the Lisa.

Perhaps this should go into another thread, but here are the DIP Switch settings on my PJ1080A:

DSW1: 010
DSW2: 111101 (this is accessable from the outside)
DSW3: 00110100
DSW4: 01010100

The prom has a sticker marked 8512 02 on it. It's a Hitachi HN482764G, at location 402. Here's the file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0zp4ayugj46z145/Canon PJ-1080A 8512-02.BIN?dl=0

Interesting, the main board of the IBM 3852 is substantially different. I guess the difference is more than just the ROM.

Is there any documentation on the IBM 3852's ESC command set? If its the same as the Canon's, at least the Windows driver should work.
