TLDR; Need fix or replacement for FDD in vintage Toshiba Satellite T1960CT, in US.

Hey y'all. Got a vintage Toshiba Satellite T1960CT. It's mostly working, except for the battery and the floppy disk drive. I will get to the battery eventually, but what I really want is to get this FDD drive working. Trying to access it from Windows 95, the A-drive indicator lights up, but I don't hear any sounds coming from the FDD itself, so I think the circuit might be toast.

Unfortunately I've got real butter fingers, so I'm not ready to start soldering in a bunch of new caps. I'm as likely to further damage the unit as I am to fix it. I'm looking for someone in the US (preferably the north east) that thinks they might be able to fix or replace this FDD and get that in working order. I'm willing to pay, so if you think this is your kind of thing, please dm me!

Thanks,

A big problem with many Toshiba notebooks is that their floppy drives do not work - I think it is more of a belt failing issue on many of them vs. caps. I've literally spent hours trying to take them apart and get them working with no success unfortunately.

At least its not just me. I don't think it's just the belt though... if it was, I imagine I'd hear some noises coming from the floppy drive as it tries and fails to read. The LED isn't blinking either. Maybe it's more than just caps though. I'd settle for buying a replacement if I could get one!

I wish I had more encouraging news! Maybe the key is replacing the caps AND the belt! I got a Gotek working on one of my Toshiba notebooks (T4700), but I had to get a 1mm to 1.25mm FFC adapter if I am remembering right.

Can you tell me more about the process of getting the gotek working in your laptop? What does it normally plug into? How would I make sure the adapter actually fits the FFC connector on my laptop's motherboard.

Also, is there somewhere you can recommend that might be able to replace this drive belt? I imagine these belts come in all shapes and sizes so I'm not sure how to go about getting the correct one.

For the belt I ordered a bunch of different sized ones in a pack from Amazon. Maybe try searching for rubber belt there.

Unfortunately this project is buried in some boxes and I can't get to it right now. What I remember is that the FFC was non standard and I had to get an adapter for it. It has been a few years so I don't know for sure what I did.
