I got a hold of this external parallel cd-rom drive that has a built-in 16-bit sound card (some models had it others didn't). Unfortunately the makers only offered drivers for windows3.1 and/or windows 95. They were supposedly looking into adding drivers for DOS but as far as I know that didn't happened.

I found this thread related to one of the earlier models: http://www.vcfed.org/forum/showthread.php?51290-Backpack-CD-ROM-Sound-Option ,mine being one of the last models.

I took it apart and found that it has the "ES1688F" chip (Sound Blaster compatible) found in many good 16-bit sound cards (see pics below)

My question is, what are the chances that there is a driver that would let me access MS-DOS sound to this built-in card through parallel port? (yes I know is wishful thinking).

Here's a later model without the sound option

Parallel-port sound devices require a 386, a driver or TSR, and a memory manager loaded (like EMM386 or QEMM), so that the system can be put into V8086 mode, so that port writes to sound blaster ports can be intercepted and redirected to the sound device on the parallel port. Without those three things, you won't get sound.
