MP3 player...

Does anyone know of a Windows MP3 player that is *not* CPU intensive? I have used WinAmp, but that pushes my CPU temp up to 45C.. I have also tried foobar2000 (41C), zinf (42C) and am currently using XMplay (41C).. My normal CPU temp is about 30 - 32C. If I can't around the CPU intensiveness that I guess I will have to buy one of those copper-finned CPU coolers from the upcoming Trenton Computer Festival...

Did you try running WinAmp in the Classic Mode? It's suppose to be less CPU intensive than the other one....

Try Billy,
Its absolutely TINY as far as media players go
It has no fancy graphics
It can scan your Entire computer for music files in a couple of seconds
I used to use it while I was still mp3 mad. I havent downloaded it again after the recent system restore though.

I'd think the MP3 decoding algorithms are so CPU intensive that all of these programs will make the CPU run for its money equally much. Then add the graphical and other overhead. Are there any hardware MP3 decoders for PCs these days, i.e. a sound card which can decode a data stream on its own?
 
Probably. I don't know that much about sound subsystems. My suggestion was a shot in the dark, but you seem to be on to something. Hardware MP3 decoding would put less of a strain on the CPU if that's the way it works. Someone will have to test that.

If it works and you have software/drivers that support it.. Here is a project related to vintage computing, a custom build motherboard using a 25 MHz 386 with extra hardware as a MP3 decoder:

It seems to have originated as an add-on board on the parallel port of a 286 computer, but the newest version is an integrated computer.
