MS-DOS 6.22 setup hangs on IBM PC/XT 5160

I was about to agree with you and Ole but when I checked my 6.22 install disk I found that it had no hidden files. Maybe they go hidden upon installing them?

As we know, the IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS files are usually marked HSR, but do not need to be that way. I note, like you, that the install disk does not mark them as hidden. I'm not going to try it, but suspect that they will be marked HSR upon installation. That makes me think that the diskette is perhaps damaged by a failed installation attempt. There should never be a hidden file with no bytes. I'm pretty sure that is the result of some mishap.

So is DRVSPACE.BIN. But these are new disks from a sealed set. From eBay -- where just about anything is possible. :-) So, who knows?

Oh right. That dammed thing. I forgot. I was looking at a 6.20 boot disk because I didn't want to open up my pristine 6.22 envelope. I suppose it is possible that DRVSPACE.BIN could have a 0 bytes file. I never touch that stuff. Nevertheless, I still think that the OP has a bad disk. We'll see.

Not at all... it's 66K! I have no idea what the 0 byte hidden file is. I was just adding that there are three hidden files -- none of which is zero. Bad disk is still a possibility although it might install from the HD.

I tried running setup from the HD, but it tells me that I have to "Insert setup disk 1 and press ctrl-alt-del to begin setup" because the setup program won't load unless it is booted from the setup disk. If I try to run SYS or FORMAT C: /S, I get "Incorrect DOS version"

several things. the volume label on dos 6.22 INSTALL disk VOLUME LABELS are critical. You can d/l dos 6.22 boot disks from several sources. First see if a dos boot disl will work. I do not think it is a issue with a scsi controller. except maybe if you have a h/f scsi card, it may not support your 1.44 floppy/.
A 720k disk will almost always work and be recognized in an xt or clone. that special controller is required.
I just onstalled dod in that gateway 486.

That's what I would expect. Why aren't you using the EXPAND command? The files that end in an underscore are compressed (needing the expand command) and the ones that don't have the underscore are good to go.

Nah, format and sys are not compressed/underscore files. They're good to go. The problem is he's booting from a 3.3 disk and that's generating the ‘Incorrect DOS version’ message.
