Can anyone assist me? I picked up an old IBM desktop at a tag sale for $4.00. The specs are: Model 82U
Machine Type 6862
What class of IBM desktop is this?
The processor is a Pentium II. 3.5 floppy, CD ROM drive
I hooked it up to a VGA monitor and turned on. The machine sounded
2 beeps and no signal sent to the monitor.
Any ideas to the problem?: How can these units be opened to see
what is inside?

Thanks for anyone's help.
Fred

It's not that old--they're otherwise known as the IBM PC300PL. Here's IBM Technical Manual. Two beeps generally indicates a memory problem--take a look inside to make sure that no one has raided your box for its memory.
Not quite the correct model (many different versions of the 300PL/GL family); check here:

To open (if it's not locked) lift the two tabs on the top rear and pull the cover forwards.

Thanks, Mike. Sometimes I can't tell my 8's from my 5's (or 6's or 3's...).

But I still suspect that someone raided the RAM out of the thing. Wouldn't surprise me if the hard disk is gone too. Heck, I do it all of the time... :)

I have a 300GL and a 300PL, if anyone is interested in these..
Nothing mysterious or unknown (or special) about these, and there's plenty of documentation and drivers etc. on IBM/Lenovo's site.

I've scrapped a dozen or so and there's still another half dozen waiting to go so I definitely don't want any more, but your 'ad' should really be more specific; there are many different models including mini-towers, different versions of the OP's flat desktop, Pentiums, Celerons, etc.

Here's a partial list of around 30:

and most of these come in various configurations according to the 3-character suffix.
