Ok, this might be old news to some. I picked up a IIc that works nicely and came upon another that doesn't work at all. There is a tall black component between the power supply and the back of the unit that is broken. If anyone knows what this is or how I can get one, let me know. It might be all that is wrong with this unit.
Anyway, there is a perfectly good drive in there that is doing no one any good. Hmm, time for a hardware hack methinks.
The external drive attaches to a 19 pin connector, but the internal drive has a 20 pin IDE connector. I googled away and found this:

The pins are arranged like this:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19
and like this:
2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20
1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 19
Basically, the numbers correspond like this (IDE-20 in parenthesis):
1-(1) 2-(3) 3-(5) 4-(7) 5-(9) 6-(11) 7- (13) 8-(15) 9-(17) 10-(19) 11-(2) 12-(4) 13-(6) 14-(8) 15-(10) 16-(10) 17-(12) 18-(14) 19-(18)
pin 20 on the ide is empty.
If you're smart, you'll get a flat IDE-20 cable, a 20 pin female IDE connector, and an appropriate 19 pin connector. If you're like me, you'll cannibalize an old printer cable and find a IDE-20 female plug that's lying around. You then cut the cable in half, cut off the pins you don't need, and pull out the multimeter to find out what wire goes to what pin. Slide the wires individually onto the connector, and you're in business. Oh, and you'll probably still have to slice off some of the connector that goes to the computer so it doesn't get in the way of the monitor plug.
To tell you the truth, the thing actually doesn't look bad. It's even got two feet on the front side to tilt it up a bit.
Now to find some more info on that null modem cable. I wonder what I can butcher around here to make that work?
