Smith Corona typewriter question?

Hey all, having trouble finding a typewriter specific forum so I thought I'd try here. I picked up a Smith Corona SL460 electric typewriter at the thrift store today. It looks like it's barely been used! There's no ink cartridge, which is no biggie, I can order one. However, before I do that, I'm wondering...when I turn it on, everything seems to be working, but when I go to type, nothing happens. Does there need to be an ink cartridge installed for the anvil/hammer to function? Like is there a trigger or something that gets activated when the cartridge is installed that will allow the machine to function? I'm comfortable doing some simpler repairs on my own, so if anyone's got any experience I'd appreciate any help! Thank you!
