Telling voodoo2 cards apart

Are there memory chips on both sides?

From the photo in that link it appears that the memory chips might be MOSEL VITELIC V53C16258H 256K X 16 EDO PAGE MODE DRAM chips. At 512KB per chip and 12 chips on the front side of the PCB that would be 6MB total. If there are another 12 of the same chips on the other side that would be 12MB total.

To be absolutely sure, you can use the 3dfx control panel which will tell you how much memory the card has.

But on a 3dfx reference design Voodoo2 (which most OEMs used), there are six groups of four RAM chips on the board, three on the front and three on the back. 8 MB boards have all three front groups and one back group populated, while 12 MB boards had all six groups populated.

With custom boards, you'll have to use the 3dfx control panel or find a data sheet on the RAM chips used and add them up.
