TI/99 4a clone

If you don't mind me asking, how did you source the custom keycaps?
There are several companies that create them, in this case I used Maxkeyboard.com. All you need to do is create a template file with the graphics you want printed (a svg file) and select the layout and colors.

Ah! You have it working! Did you happen to make a note of the error(s) in the schematics I published? Ive been meaning to get back to troubleshooting, but free time seems to be a very fleeting resource for me lately.

Ugh!! I do not recall exactly what I needed to change, but I do not think it was too significant. I will try to spend some time this weekend and review what I have and see if I can figure it out.

I do know that MOST of my changes were around adding the extra 32K of RAM and fitting a grom emulator. I have a vague recollection that there was something small -- I will try to remember that and get you that info.

I just checked out the Github for this. I see it's at .96. Any updates? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a few boards.

Welcome aboard SteveV22FE!.

And indeed, I'll also love to hear about it. As the fabricemontupet's project is not publicy available, this one is still the only one you can build by yourself.

I reached out to Fabrice, but he’s going through some personal issues right now.

I’m one of the few folks that used to to own two, yes TWO, TI-99/8 computers. You can see them at aug.99er.net

This project has my interest and I think I’m going to pull the trigger on this project and give it a go.

Cool, wonderful machine the TI-99/8!, sadly no clone projects out there...

Hope Fabrice can sort out his issues...anyway, let us know if you finally give it a go. Although seems a costly project (both in time and money), I'm also interested in it.

Here's Dan's case design for the computer...still looks like a work in-progress.

I think the keyboard should be centered and a maybe hole cut for the cartridge slot.

Does Dan Werner check this thread? It's gaining a lot of traction on other forums and Facebook.

Not too much I'm afraid :(
Don't want to pollute this thread with other forum threads's subjects; but I've just seen the Geneve discussion and IMHO, although its absolutely wonderful to imagine a GENEVE clone project, we must be a bit more practical and stay with what we have right now. I'm happy just looking that TI-99/8-like 3D case!

Maybe Dan Werner can be emailed about the hype his project has recently generated?...

I looked on his repository, no luck in finding an email for him.

I agree with sticking with what we have. As a former Geneve owner, I never did much with it. It was more of a hot rod 4A for than it ever was a true stand alone computer. I’m not interested in a Geneve clone.

I’m sure things are different these days, but yes, I think taking the 4A to the next level like the /8 did is the way to go.

Afternoon!!

Sorry -- I do not get a chance to look at these forums as often as I would like, but I got a note this morning that there was some activity on this project.

I did have the case printed and I have the machine up and running in the case. (See below).

I have been distracted on other projects recently, but do still have hopes to revisit this one as well. I have visions of the board on one ATX sized PCB with PEB slots that could potentially fit in an ATX case.

Because I only look at these messages periodically -- If someone has questions on this project, feel free to use the e-mail address on my github where this project is hosted, or open a github issue as those also get forwarded to my e-mail.

One of the projects that I have been distracted with happens to be another TI based system. It is a CPU PCB of Stuart Conner's Mini-Cortex system to run in Andrew Lynch's Duodyne system. It is a pretty cool TI 990(ish) system with support (and software) for Unix V6, Cortex Basic, and the MDEX operating System.

Hey Dan!

I've tried to email you, but it gives me a lame message that I don't have enough posts/time on board. But I REALLY want to talk to you about this project.

If any one else is interested, here is a pic of the inside of the case. The power supply board is a pico ATX.

The EPROM in the lower left is mapped to the cartridge space. In this case I have the ROM from extended basic in that slot and I have the GROM image for extended basic loaded in the unicorn board with the system GROMS. With Extended Basic running, it can access the fast 16bit RAM that is in the system. All the details are in the repo.

ti-1.jpgboard from Amazon.

Well . . . knowing that existed could have saved me some work :) -- and pretty much eliminates the need for me to continue on with the "next version" of this project as it is already way ahead of where I am with the project. I will probably put the finishing touches on what I have and then move on to something else.

Thanks for sharing . . . I will do some reading up on the excellent work that you have done!!

Your website is very impressive and I would be interesting in building one of your Tiny-99 computers, is your project opensource?? Is there somewhere to download the schematics and gerber files?

Thanks!
Dan
He's keeping that design closed. We appreciate you making this available and please, continue the work on your board!

Nice clone of the 99/4a! Does it have a cartridge slot, joystick port, cassette port? Also, the connector on the side to connect a PEB, etc?

Yes, it has a cartridge port, you can see that in the upper right corner just below the I/O port. the Joystick port is on the left side of the console and the cassette is on the upper right next to the keyboard cable. The I/O port is at the rear of the board on the far upper right.
